I agree with Lawrence, getting more locals involved will bring more enthusiasm and probably as many people as one of the 'big' names.
the lineup is amazing and the event sounds great.
However 250 dollars for a 3-4 day festival is unheard of, even here in Japan with tons of the so-called big acts, world-class venue and art, etc. BY comparing the price to similar-scale events I would think the organizers would see that costs are too high, and perhaps pare back the lineup, etc to make it more accessible.
Pricing the on-the-day tickets too high to encourage people to buy presales is not a good reason, as one can clearly see it turns people off instead of motivating them to buy presales.
I would even recommend that they make a bar and sell alcohol if that offsets costs, it won't affect the vibe of the party significantly and people will bring their own alcohol anyway. What's wrong with serving alcohol anyway?
Conclusion: If I were in the area, I'd probably either volunteer to get in for free/at a discount or just be turned off and not go at all. I just can't see myself paying 250 dollars or even 180, especially when you compare it to weeklong world-class festivals for similar or lower prices.
No bad feelings for the orgs or people going, I'm sure they had their reasons and intentions, this is just the voice of a single partygoer. Good luck with the event. We Do This Every Day |

I've never seen bassnectar play, and I'm already "over it" ;-)
I wouldn't even go see a shpongle DJ set in my own hometown of knoxville, TN, maybe I'm just a fuddy-duddy these days.... but simon coming to play knoxville on the jam-band tour circuit is definitely a sign that the magic of shpongle-land has LONG past me.
$250 is obviously too much for many people, though I did pay about that for an all-access pass at MUTEK-2009, I felt like that was worth it.
seeing les claypool, koxbox, and extrawelt at the same party sounds pretty fun / interesting, though! good luck...

Yea I know I am def tired of Posford. I could care less if I ever seen him play again. Always the same damn thing over and over. Him and his silly ass outfits But it does seem like this event is catering to the Dubstep crowd. Like there really isn't much Psytrance or emphasis on Psytrance which is kinda sad. I don't know for 250 a ticket there better be a epic Psytrance headliner in my personal opinion.

i liked simon posford when he released his last psy trance cd... when was that... 1997? 12 years later when there's better acts with 1000x the amount of more intricate psy in their personal libraries that charge 1/1000 of the price Id go with someone else :/ maybe thats just my rationalizing gone bad or something tho.
other than that however, I wish I could go to this real bad. It looks to be epic for sure!!! Les Claypool, Penta, Blutech, Flip Flop, and Kox Box all look to be stellar together. I hope ill be able to volunteer

I could be wrong, but I don't think Simon is playing a 'Hallucinogen' set. I believe as previously stated he is demoing his new shpongle stuff; which is completely different.
I heard his 'Hallucinogen in Dub' whatever that was, but it seemed like all old stuff. I don't think that he has done anything under the 'Hallucinogen' alias, at least in the studio, for a long time.
His Shpongle stuff is pretty great in my opinion. I think it's some of the most truly psychedelic music around to be honest. It's not really dance music, but great chilling music.

Here’s your first look at our 2009 lineup… and these are just the starters! We’re not finished announcing everybody yet…!

We will be posting about 60 additional acts shortly. Most of them locals... As we mentioned, this is only our first release... more announcements are on the way...
As far as the comments on the price go, consider it "in the suggestion box". The gate price is high... Valid point...
The price right now however is $180. We had tickets available at a lower price and they sold out. Hopefully, someone can post here on the earlier side next year and give everyone an opportunity at a less expensive option.
Breathe... breathe...
At this point it is fair to state that Symbiosis Gathering is not an underground party.
We are a fully permitted event where you can be sure that:
a)you won't have to run through the woods with your worldly possessions as the cops bust the party
b)nor will you have to leave when you are in no condition to drive with no particular place to go
c)nor be shot at by an adjacent landowner who just wants some peace and quiet
We are in communication with local law enforcement and they know that we are going to have banging music from 6 pm on Thursday and continues until Monday at 2 pm. That's (5) five days. At times the music is going to be so loud you may have to back up from the sound system.
And we can do it because we are PERMITTED at a venue bordering Yosemite National Park where there is a lake you can swim in at the stage.
So far its named the "Lake Stage" because its at the lake.
As far as the alcohol is concerned... If we sell beer we are required to create a "beer garden" and require ALL ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES to be consumed INSIDE it. All boozers would be in a cage by the music... bum deal...
Additionally... we would have to search EACH AND EVERY CAR as they came in and CONFISCATE ALL ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES... bum deal...
Instead... we have offered a BYOW policy which will work as long as folks respect the golden rules of being good to one another and themselves. We like this option WAY better.
If you want... I will offer a $150 ticket to anyone who wants my parking head Eric to search their car on the way in and tax their alcohol. For every beer we will tax $3 which is a fair markup for a festival beer.
If you bring in more than 10 beers to our 5 (five) day event it would end up costing you more than the $180 ticket so in the end WE ARE SAVING YOU MONEY... Unless you don't drink... and you got me there...
We also have no sponsors so what that means is that we aren't answering to anyone except the community. We have no other agendas other than to create a truly creative, artistic and transformational event.
There will be at least 120 acts performing at the Gathering this year so if you really don't want to hear ONE PARTICULAR ARTIST (because I know he can be so distracting), I'm sure you could find something else to do.
In fact... check out the speakers and workshops. Alex and Allison Grey, Fritjof Capra, Starhawk, Bob Frisell... Its going to be epic...
So really... we are not underground and we are not commercial. We're something else...
and you are all invited...

i hope though that any of these other acts that are being booked are not more dub step....
cause while i do know its the "hot money making genre" these days
symbiosis this year does have a very, very ,very dubstep heavy lineup...
However i still feel this pricing is over the top...
and paradon me but i am in SF, am a fairly respected player as both a dj and org in SF, know Boske, Tony and Jen....
and there were NO posts on any local lists i am on about the first tier tickets...
posting to your own list, to those who have friended the event on FB or to the Symbiosis tribe does not speak well of much in advance promotions...
and the only place any flyers for the event have yet to be seen by me or any of my friends was at your stage at How Wierd
so perhaps while the behind the scenes orgs, have been working hard to secure what sounds to be a great venue, and getting all the permits and ducks in a row
your promotions team has done a piss poor job

Seriously though, stop booking Posford. If I wanted to listen to Gamma Goblins for 15 minutes, I'll take a does of stupid and grab my cd case from eons ago. The guys music is great to listen to at home but it's so outdated and boring for a party.
I didn't notice the price when I posted my first reply but I agree with Lawrence here, that is ridiculous. Wonder how much the costs would come down if just ONE year you didn't book Simon and added some good locals that have a nice draw.

I bet that most of the other headlining acts (like Bassnectar) cost a lot more than Simon does to book. I was under the impression that it wasn't that expensive to book Posford.
Thing is, you go outside of the Psytrance scene and into the hippy/burner/non-psy/or rave scenes, Simon Posford is probably one of the ONLY recognizable psy artists to these people. So in a way, he might be the best psy headliner you could hope for in this crowd.
ALSO, I still think that as mentioned he's playing SHPONGLE TRACKS NOT HALLUCINOGEN TRACKS, unless they plan on having him play two sets.
I think that in the case of Domestic/Ido Ophir, he's playing a tech progressive set, but nobody has said anything about this just yet. He goes under his real name "Ido Ophir" for Minimal Techno, and "Domestic" for Full-On. For some reason, going off of all the other acts there I would guess he's going to play minimal tech.
