so now, after less than a week of recovery time, i'm still taking in all the feedback, starting to see the bigger picture... you can't please all the people all the time, but i think enough people had an uplifting experience to validate the immense effort contributed by so many members of this broad global community.
THANK YOU again for sharing what was good, what was great, and what we can work on. constructive criticism is welcome, especially when it comes paired with a potential solution! thank you for giving us room to grow and learn.
this is hard work, but can ultimately be very fulfilling... but please remember at the heart of this are people who are maybe a lot like you, maybe not so much, but have enough common vision to want to continue co-creating with you. let's not make it any more difficult than the world already sets it up to be. as individuals and as a community, i am continually inspired by the people around me... and this is the motivation to continue.
with love, respect and appreciation,
zariat

oh man I really didn't expect this thread to look like this.
bephree I met you at the volunteer check-in, I'm Justin, my girlfriend and I volunteered in that area several times there and helped you some with parking volunteers! There were some issues on the organization side, but it largely had to do with the Org having so many volunteers bail on them, which I thought was really kind of disgraceful. I've thrown parties, I've volunteered at festivals, and I've been to a lot of festivals, but I have _never_ seen the staff work as hard as these guys did. They were really fucking running around largely because they never had volunteers show up.
This festival absolutely oozed love and attention to detail. Everywhere we went we were fucking thrilled. The stage deco was just absolutely out of this world (although the lake stage was my favorite ). The art everywhere was also phenomenal. I think people who are acting negatively about this festival take a step back and think how many places outside of BM have you seen such a concentrated fusion of art and music at a festival? I haven't quite frankly.
I love psytrance, this past summer alone I've been to several all/mostly psytrance festivals. I organized an event in my town that had psytrance, the first of it's kind in 5? years. You know though, it's ok to like other music. I saw the lineup and I knew it was going to be heavy on glitch-hop and dubstep and I was fucking thrilled because I think they are great too. They can also be intensely psychedelic, anyone that thinks differently should have been at heyoka's morning set at the lake stage, which was one of the highlights not just of that festival but of the fucking year for me.
This feather and leather bullshit is just that, so much divisive bullshit. I've seen plenty of people in leather wear at plenty of psytrance parties. I found the people to be extremely nice, my girlfriend and I dress somewhat like fucking kandi kids and no one talked down to us or treated us any differently because I was wearing phat pants and not some nice leather chaps. If you feel like you can't talk to someone because all you can talk to them at a festival is psytrance or your all hemp clothing (or whatever you wear?) then that is I suppose your misfortune.
The thing that disturbed me the most at the event was the number of people I saw and met that had simply snuck into the festival. As someone who has organized events this really strikes a chord. There were so many ways people could have gotten in for free by just participating moreso in the event but instead they had this righteous sense of self-entitlement. I really hope you guys did ok at the end because I could see how much money and effort you put into this. I want this event to continue and I know if you're losing 60 grand on an event year after year it makes it hard. I would suggest in the future hiring some more security to do entrance so that a traffic jam like on thursday doesn't happen and so that you make sure that people PAY for the event. These people who just think "hey there will always be more custies to pick up our slack" are truly disgusting and not part of any scene I want to be involved with!
All this being said I cannot wait to go back to symbiosis. It was by far the most well put together art and music festival I have ever been to. I hope that you continue to bring an equal mix of incredible artists. I'd also like to mention for those that stated they didn't have a lot of local artists, that while they may not have had a ton of local psy artists, they had a number of bay area dubstep/glitch/midtempo artists like mimosa, heyoka, beats antique, an-ten-nae, lazer sword, vibesquad, etc...
also next year book mochipet please! (and heyoka again!) |

With all said so far, I really hope that any divisive feelings do not affect the possibility of Psytrance showing up at a future Symbiosis...
Vocal thoughts aren't the only thoughts. |

To tell you the truth, because of this message board we have decided that the best course of action is to strike trance permanently from the lineup because we don't think we have enough trance to get people to come out.
At this point, we are going to be switching our vibe so that we have one stage that will be dubstep for 72 hours and then our other stages will be country and line dancing.
Line dancing is the next new thing. If you don't know about it yet get ready and go buy some cowboy boots. |

But what about those of us who ADORE polka music?! It's ethnic and worldmusic qualified too!!
We demand a large soundsystem with a dedicated technician to make sure the accordions' timbre is PERFECT.
Symbiosis 2010: Featuring Toby Keith and Weird Al. Bassnectar will be on a side stage. |

my only complaint is there isnt a dedicated ghetto tech stage
DJ Assault in 2010: the year the bears shake that ass.
also the lack of chiptune representation is really disappointing, there are lots of really qualified gameboy jockies who should be able to bleep into the night...

Thank you everyone for their constructive (as well as the destructive) criticism. We have a 50 gallon drum where we are putting all of the suggestions and feedback and we will be dousing it with gasoline and setting it on fire just as soon as everyone's comments are in.
The 2009 Symbiosis Gathering was an experience to remember and experiment to reconfigure. Many things went somewhat according to plan and other plans simply made no sense at all. However, we can be sure of one thing, Symbiosis Gathering happened and it was a wild ride.
At this point, we cannot foresee what 2010 has in store for us but I will say this:
Symbiosis Events will be back in some form, at some time, at some place in the future and we hope that whatever we do, we create a more complex, ecological, trans-genre, transformative, next level event where you will need a truck winch to pull your jaw off the ground.
Our team of mad scientists and unstable insomniacs are already working around the clock to create the conditions for an moderately organized chaos that will blow your mind.
Consider yourself warned... |

That was the most beautiful festival I have ever been to. The deco, the people everything. The food was FUCKING AWESOME who ate the Coconut soup that had chicken in it next to Field Stage? SOOOO good. I loved the composting aspects and the recycling bins everywhere. So easy to do and thinking it's something we should do at every party anywhere. It really forced you to think about what you are tossing away. Loved that! The breakfast kitchen was also good, nice little muffins yummy! And all organic. The use of the tree foliage on certain environment designs was brilliant I couldn't ignore the bright green moss all over the place and when I saw it in art I had to stop and admire with nothing but respect for the artist who made it or thought if using it. Whoever you are, thank you for noticing the insignificant inanimate objects of our planet that illuminate soo much color you cant help but stare! I wish I had seen more, next I'll try to get there earlier!! I must!
Being a replacement DJ as the org put it to me was not so bad either. Although the choice of words was quite harsh, but I digress. I knew I was not destined to play, since I was not on the original line up. I wasn't going to go originally since I have 3 kids and if I have to ask for babysitting its has to be slot related and have a slight promise of some cash (didn't get that... eh, oh well at least my wife didn't have to pay to get in). I don't use babysitters otherwise. All in all glad I got to play the other Symbiosis gatherings and got over it slightly still kind of poopey faced. But then Surprise !!! your playing! We got to chill with our SF crew at Bear camp and the rest is history now.
I really don't understand all this about no psytrance. Last I checked I played there and I've never played anything else. I have proof (tehe). The other two times I played at Symbiosis... I played psytrance. (oh wait one time I started to play then my brain broke, thanks B! soul brothers united strrrong that night before my set haha) sorry Symbiosis. So what people are going on about is beyond me.
I mean where else can you dance and meet new people and see beautiful pieces of art that are larger then any opinion anyone can have AND have bear encounters then at this fest. That's right folks this years symbiosis came complete with wild animals who stalked your coolers and vandalized your food wrappers and zip locked bags! Fucking awesome. I only feel bad for people who didn't go because they blew their cash wad all over the Burning Man.
It was Ribotto who put it nicely. He said why spend a $1000 or more to battle the elements at BM when you have shade, lakes and art here at Symbiosis! I totally agreed with him as we basked in the shade at Bear Camp. Maybe not as much art as BM or strange stuff but still shit that moved your soul when you looked at it.
I have to agree mostly with the position of people who don't care what people are wearing. I'm not at the party for a fashion show. And I find the clothing that people wear at or in our community interesting and creative. Sort of a reflection of the culture we are making and living. To each his own.
Honestly I can't wait to go next year. Trance or no trance. Replacement dj or not =) Thank you Symbiosis crew!
