Hello all,
This is a very common effect, I hear it a lot, but I seem to be unable to figure out how it's being done! I've posted a sample from a classic dub track here http://filebox.vt.edu/users/amarano/woosh.wav I love how it sounds like the percussion is moving under water (whoosh!).
Phaser/flanger? Am I working the settings wrong?
Any tips to what effects are being used, and what parameters I should put would be appreciated.
Thanks!

I will try both of those out (didn't get a chance last night), but I doubt it's either of them. That's a clip from King Tubby's album "Dub Like Dirt" which was a 1975 release. It has to be some creative use of hardware effects + tape splicing, but if I can get a similar effect with NI spektral delay or Ohmforce, I'll be a happy camper.
Thanks for the help! |

if it's done with some kind of tape machinery, try the elottronix XL from elogoxa (freeware tape-looper-delay-thingy), otherwise... most weird fx on drums are done with reverb... delayed reverb, reversed reverb, cutting off the dry and only letting thru the wet,... all different FX u can produce with reverb on drums, and it all sounds great if u use a good reverb. gated reverb on snares is a great way to make them more powerfull, make sure you close the gate the exact moment the snare-sample stops (the moment the input drops below the threshold it will close the gate, so put the threshold high enough, don't forget to let the gate listen to the dry signal while gating the wet signal).
prolly this is all not to the point, but i think reverb on drums is a subject that's still too shrouded in mistery. Most common effects on drums are in fact done with reverb... |
