Ok so im using Cubase 4 and im trying to figure out how I get my bass line into mono. Is this something that is down after bouncing the instrument into audio? or can this be done while using the instrument? |

use the stereo dual panner (right click on the pan) and set both channels to the center. |

you can also export into 2 split mono channels or open mono group channel.

I open a mono Group channel and send the bassline there, it does the job |

Sorry about the typo up above. But I appreciate the help! I'll give this a go once I get out of class. |

imo the best thing is to use the synth directly in mono (if its possible, like with esm in logic for example)...what I do then is to insert logics direction mixer as last thing in the chain to make sure its really mono and nothing got changed by one of the inserts

If there is no difference between the left and right channels (and there shouldn't be unless you added a stereo effect or unison pan or something like that), why bother making it mono? It will end up in the stereo mix bus anyway.

for bassline even small changes makes difference in phase for stereo recording. mono bass will sound more clear & centered.
its also matter of taste..some like to spread their bass wide on the stereo.
for me its works good in mono.
i understood that bass has no real sense of location as hes spreading his warmth around the room, it seems hes down and center of the room.

Shachar,
My bass is also usually 100% mono. As I don't add any stereo effects or do anything in the synth to make it stereo, there is no need for any extra steps to make it mono.
Sending a mono bass line (on a stereo channel) into a mono bus and then back to a stereo bus (the mix/outputs) seems pointless unless there is something making the bass line stereo in the first place.

for me, i mix the whole mix in the pulsar`s mixer and not in the cubase so i can send the bass into mono channel.
if i got you right, in your opinion there is no reason to use mono channels because the output result will anyway be in stereo. think about this for 1 sec... |

what do i do ?
in FL7 all fx channels are stereo... so when i load blue -for example- to create a bass sound, before all i load a waves stereoimager and i degrade stereo image to 0, means center so i don't worry of any pan modulations within the track
same with the kick

It depends what you are after. Trying to make the sound mono or use less resources?
It makes sense to use a mono channel but IMO it doesn't really make much sense to take a stereo channel and send it to a mono bus just to make it mono.
The only reason to make it mono would be if you are using very heavy plugins. They would use less CPU in mono. Or if you have a limited number of available channels. (Hardware mixers etc).

Hm..but if your favourite Bassynth is a stereo one for example it does make sense to route it on a mono bus..like a kick/bass group and a little bit of compression on this group..and even for mono compatibility..and to get some free space in your mix for other signals..just my opinion..
