hey guys.

i never really used it...
so maybe someone can tell me if im right,
and help me out at some points.

swing/groove = when instruments dont play exact
on timing... this way certain "feelings" can develop, right?

can i use swing on basslines too, and if so,
do the percussions have to do the same swing? even the kick?

how to apply swing best? is there a function
i cubase5 which let me apply swing on midi notes,
otherwise i would need to bounce each instrument...

thanks & cheers

I use swing when im making a more downtempo track to give it a mre human feeling.Since its a slower tempo you can hear the drums more clearly and theres more of them in that style and if it sounds to mechanical.Even on high bpm psytrance songs i would only use it on the hi hats and stuff. You can do it manually like....change velocity and note lengths. On Fl there are presets like 16th swing style or "behind the beat" playing, not sure on Cubase.           www.soundcloud.com/kabbalisticvillage

try to use 16th-66% or 16th-88% on your hihat midi loop or basslines you will get the point

You can put a quantize fx in the midi insert channel.

it's not only that the instruments don't have tight timing, but that the off-timing is intentional and periodical, hence producing a swing feel.

for example you move every second 1/16 a lttle bit back or forth. there is no tool necessary for this, just apply it manually in the midi notes, it's much more organic this way.

i apply swing (or unquantised notes) with different amounts or rythms to many lanes in a track, it's what makes the percussion move the body and what makes the melody push forward the whole track. else it easily sounds static and stiff.

shuffle around a couple of notes in a loop and you realise how it makes everything move.

imo it works best with slower tempi, it gives more room for experimentations and different grooves.

swing settings can also add really cool effects if you sequencer will allow for automating too!

Of course i think it sounds amazing on hats and percussion sounds because it will give it more of a humanized feel since a human drummer isn't 100% accurate!           http://soundcloud.com/brentmalik

another method for humanizing the drums is to randomize the velocity and link that to some parameter vol, filter freq, attack, etc.

I have heard a really cool track by deliriant lately where the 16th note closed high hats are swung, and the rest of the track is straight, sounds really cool.           --

Yeah, everything 'bout shuffle has been said.

I just want to warn you about one thing:
Once you go shuffle, there's no turning back.

After I fell in love in glitchy, shuffled minimal techno back in the days - all of the tracks that weren't shuffled started to sound so boring and plain to me.
Now I can't live without those shuffled grooves.

Oh, yes - I find it to sound much better at lower bpm, say 125-128.

timing are crucial from goove, same as with bassline and kicks it s down to millisecond accuracy , too early or too late and it just don't work as good..
if you can set the snap to grid value to your drums transients in the daw and then go from this to adjusts track delay and grooves quantize you will get really tight sound or even working wihtout snap to grid for drums and just by ears rules but take way more time !

also modulated delay work great ,bounce cut rearrange with this you can add massive groove.

on analog drums machines ,every hit sound different, it s noticable when puting some snare fast roll for example, the sound is not like a machin gun but modulate a little( a bit like a bassline with free running oscillator),a good way to break this whne using sample and to inject more life is to modulate/chnage a bit the attack of some drums on every hit and a little the pitch(not on kicks).. but it s very subbtle anyway,it won't change much things , using a bit of fx modulation could work too i guess, like phazer, chorus, or litrle filtering modulation, small eq automation could work too..everyhting that inject subbtle modulation to break a little the robotic effect when it s not wanted

not exactly. they play on timing and in sync, but the timing grid itself is different. its not that human is playing non-quantized groves, swing can be quantized, this is a method of playing with shifts, but the sifts are the same.

yeap.. its still a mechanical feeling when swing values are quantized in swing percentage grid lines.
what changes is the position of the notes in relativity to the standard non swing grid.           http://www.landmark-recordings.com/
