I have a quick question for all of the multi-person units

this has been mentioned before in how-to topics, but i think it would be interesting to hear how various people do it

when doing a live show with multiple laptops, and/or instruments how do you resolve the timing issue? use MIDI sync / clock, tap tempo, or set master tracks, with live playing i.e. drums, guitar synth. i'm sure there are other ways, so lets open it up.

Once, a long time ago in a galaxy far far away we used to do the whole hog... Roland MC500 sequencer with a click track going into the drummers ear, all mixing and fx preprogrammed for the whole set and if we had the money we'd probably have tried programming the lighting as well... the end result was mind blowing from a technical point of view (Ok so it was the 80's) but I ended up feeling like a Midi guitar and the drummer is still not speaking to me.

Am guessing at some point I'll be taking the music live again but this time round I'm looking at simplifying arrangements specifically for live performance as well as finding a way to generate Midi timing from a live drum kit... (any suggestions ?)

The way I'm looking at it now is that it may be an amazing feat to reproduce the sound of the CD live but it's an even more amazing feat to be able to give someone a unique experience if they go to all the trouble of hauling their asses out of bed to come and listen to us in the flesh...

Not to mention that it would also give them a reason to buy a live version of the CD... ;-)

..thats funny

i've experimented with the click track before too, and it definitely did suck for the drummer. generating timing from a live drum kit sounds pretty hazardous...

what i would do in that case is lay down the kick and the bass on a sequencer, and have the drummer play along.           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

Or trade the drummer in for a percusionist...

yeah, if your doing trance. your going to want your kick and bass tight.

have the drummer concentrate on the upper part of the kit (hi-hats, snare, toms)

a few other trance bands (sun project, Uni) do it like this with pretty good results

..or if it is necessary for the drummers feel, let him play the kick along with your sequenced kick, and eq them at different freqs

just my opinion- i would stay away from having the drummer keep the time though, it will be imprecise, not to mention a technical nightmare           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

dont worry, i wont

actually, i am starting work on a project with a drummer soon, and have been thinking / pondering over the same thing (hence this post..)

i think that having a full live trance band would be the shit!!! but the worry is that from previous experience, i know many drummers would get tired of playing continuous 4/4 at 136-146bpm without getting tired unless they were a serious machine. if you have this kind of drummer, than you are blessed and by all means should go for it!

peace!           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!
