I don't work with Cubase (w/Logic) but I can explain the little concept for ya.
if you have 4 speakers, I guess u connected 2 of them to outputs1-2 and the other to 3-4 because that's the way you can start getting surround.
I guess that in Cubase' mixer there are the master output channels of output1-2 and 3-4
so let's say a sound goes from output 1 till 4 with pannin... you get a feeling it surrounds you (when you put the 4 speakers around you).
That's it I guess - try ot think of what purposes for the surround and start kickin.

aaaaahhh..... well, i think diong this properly could get a little more complex than that what i reckon you really wanna do is set up your system in DOLBY 5.1 for that, as i understand it, you need a soundcard specially configured for 5.1 outpiut and aalso an amp setfor it youll also need an additional rear speaker (the speach channel) this way you can code your sound in five channels the only album im aware of this being on so far was the special DVD release of Sting's last album most films are recordded ion 5.1, and you can only presently get 5.1 recorded on DVD also americain digital television is broadcasted in 5.1
however, you were talking about stereo, which you should already have, and need only two speakers toget that effect putting in two speakers to each channel might mean you get sounds coming at you from all around you, bnut two of the pairs of speakers will duplicate whats coming out the other, and if you dont positi0on them correctly around you when doing this, youll get seriouso9unding phasing efefcts sly weird |

I have sound blaster! Live 5.1 digital. And my speakers are set to 4.1 position! I have 4 twiters and one Subwoofer! My speakers connected like this: * 2 front speakers to Output-1. * 2 rare speakers to Output-2.
And the sound blaster has an option to work as Live DOLBY Digital Surround...
But still how can actually make the sound go around me from one speaker to the next and complete the 4 spkeakers (Full surround) In Cubase 5! |

project, "surround" is an effect for 2 speakers to sound more "3d" what u maybe want is: quadriphonic system. SB live supports this, but AFAIK Cubase has no support for 3d audio: it will have to be a real upgrade of the mixer [4 channels per slider with some joistick :/ ] and usually pro quality audio cards are stereo, and not quadro. so you'll have to play with groups in order to achieve this effect:
create 2 groups front, rear now take 2 stereo audio channels that play the same melody. now connect them into groups correctly - and u have quadro system, now u need to direct the front group to output 1+2, and the rear 3+4 [with master mixer panel]
note: this is very clumsy, u'll have to record this with automation and repeats, but this is a possible solution.
if u don't understand what i mean ... sorry man.
but generally the impulse tracker 3 studio project is supposed to support quadro fully :-))) so wait and see.
or contact steinberg and suggest them top add this to cubase 6
i actually think, [if u ask me :) ] quadriphony is the next thing in music.

Cubase does not yet support surround sound processing, you have to use Steinberg Nuendo, Minnetonka Mx51, Sek'd Samplitude 2496 or Sek'd Sequoia.. These all natively support Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. |

Do you have any idea how the professional movie music makers do it? I mean, their 5.1/7.1 sound is *SUPERB* and i guess they are not making their own software's and equipment...

i'm sure, if u have 500.000 $ to spend on the studio, u can setup a full quadro studio. i mean if you're Sony or Philips, or Hollywood and you own these patents they own ... u can afford it :-)
all this can be also done by custom software, but still somebody has to pay for it.
you can check out what are the prices of 5.1 studios :-)))) |

My mind is set on surround track! |

Sorry for the late attachment but it has just came to my knowledge that the MOTU 1296 (Mark Of The Unicorn) supports 5.1 digital surround at 96Khz/24-bit (DVD quality) It has 12 Stereo Inputs and Outputs and if needed can use those to record TWO simultaneous 5.1 mixes!! Each normal stereo channel is then converted/routed into 1 5.1 surround channel when the bass sub channel included. (5.1 = 6 inputs out of the 12 available)
What a bomb ass card! + dedicated bombed ass software! it considered as one of the top of the tops! and only for 8000 nis (though i think thats only for the break box, you need one of MOTU card to plug it into)
so, if you have the dough.... :-) |

There is a program out there that you can assign sound files to six different speakers(L/R front, L/R surround, center, and subwoofer). It's called Surcode DVD DTS. I have it, but I don't have a surround sound card so I've never used it. |
