why don't you post under your real username? why create a new account just 2 weeks ago from your North Carolina IP address just to make this point? what are you hiding from?

Your charts would be correct in that I have never performed at the gaian mind festival. As for attending the land that it's held on, that I have done for a reason separate from psychedelic trance, so I highly doubt that has anything to do with the price of tea in London.

Also, take into consideration that I for the most part live in the US, and some of the reasons why I haven't been to the festival are similar to some of the reasons why you would want someone else to do a party that weekend. However the underlying issue I feel is that other east coast organizers have respect for what the gaian mind crew does, not just for themselves for but for the scene in the US as a whole. Respect for the fact that this festival has existed as long as it has in a place where festivals of it's size in the US has met with major opposition over the years. I.E. Fusion Festival. Here's another instance of a festival in the US that has a large lineup, but the annual overhead combined with a lack of enough people to cover costs even though you would think that the amount of people would balance it out... Symbiosis Festival.... This event can arguably say that it brings Top shelf acts (taste aside) and it still comes out in the red,(even though it charges 150 US at the door) so I am not sure if even doing the math correctly will actually work.

If you want to make a party on the weekend of the Solstice, nobody is stopping you. Just asking a long established event to change the date seems like there is no respect for the efforts these people put in. Party crews for the most part are made up of party freaks that like you, have an idea of how they like their events to occur. We all started as dancers and supporters, just over time the people who are doing events wanted to do a bit more. Since you're posting from a North Carolina IP address, why not go ask the Deerfields owners how much it costs to do an event on their property? NC has one of the best pieces of land in the country for festivals, access to soundsystems are not so difficult.

One thing I will touch on just briefly is the fact that Boom festival has the attitude toward artists, that they should be honored to be asked to play at this festival and they assume you were going to go no matter what anyway. The gaian mind festival doesn't seem to extend that attitude to international artists that are willing to come here for usually significantly less of their asking price in Europe, plus deal with US customs and immigration to even get there. However, considering that most of the festival is relatively local talent, those guys are expected to get themselves there.

There's a lot more points I would love to touch on, but I think that most of this is directed toward you. If you actually are interested in doing something different, then I would love to continue this conversation directly. Get my email, and start a conversation. Otherwise all you are doing is shaking a hornet's nest.

As for the illness sparking change.... Boom Festival had a very similar virus too..
But to be honest, waiting for someone else to come and change things for you is a fool's errand. Take some matters into your own hands and find out what you need to make that sufficient change. You have started down the path by asking questions, and that's good.

Everything I have ever heard about Gaian Mind has been extremely positive (well, aside from that one thing last year) and it is pretty much the only American psytrance festival with credibility north of the border. I don't see why they'd need to change to suit minority interests. If music selection is an issue, why not provide some honest feedback and leave it at that? They've always seemed to host a variety of quality artists to suit all tastes.

Pardon me, but we are talking about solstice events in the eastern USA and that is what I meant... although in a more general sense, aside from Burning Man, Gaian Mind is the main draw for people in this part of Canada.

I work with a crew who has tried to create it's own annual, then however often on the year we can, put on another festival..

it can be done, it can be done well

The MOST important thing is a somewhat large core group to help plan ALL aspects of your festival, before it's even announced....this is the only way to make sure no corners are cut, or just left out entirely, and so that people understand your intention in doing the festival in the first place... i say this with my own hindsight included

I find that if you live some place without a large dedicated group of trancers that are willing to work as much as they are willing to dance, that working with communities already in place, like the burn community, is the only way to get things done right
