Sardine Festival

Skala Kaloni

Lesvos makes the most of its famous sardines with a festival in their honour at Skala Kaloni. People come from near and far to taste the best of these fish, as well as plenty of ouzo. At night, there's live entertainment and a general festival atmosphere.
More like an inland sea then a bay, Kaloni is ringed by mountains on two sides and the fertile valley on another. It is full of sardines, which Lesvos and Kaloni in particular are famous for. It is said that they are the healthiest in the world due to their high mineral content (some say this is because of the rains that wash the oil from the olive groves into the bay). They are eaten grilled, fried or as Sardeles Pastes - caught that morning, salted on the boat and served that night, with lemon.
