if rythmic and non rythmic atmospheres is what you're looking for, get absynth..

you can also work leads and probably some unique basses out of it too, thou absynth can be quite a bitch to work with

Omnisphere. For pads/atmospheres I havent had anything else come remotely close.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

I see people constantly deriding Omnisphere for being 'sample based' - most probably don't know that it has a fully badass synth engine as well. Options are good - it could come with no samples and it would still be worth the money. The synth engine is that good.

Plus, there are 8,000 samples in the newest version of Omni...all professionally recorded by people who have been doing this for decades with professional equipment and in very interesting ways. I don't use sample packs at all anymore except for percussion, but I use Omni constantly.

With sample packs in the past that have FX, drones, leads etc I would just chuck them into a track and they would work, sure - but they would sound more or less like the original sample and so I didn't feel like I was being very creative, I was just stealing shit. with Omnisphere I can very quickly muck with a preset or sample and get very unique creative results.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

Here is a short list with soft synths I like to use:

Get Massive. Its is great for stabs, leads. But it is even better for FXs and noisy sequences.

Absynth is great for bass sounds, sequenced ambiences, very unusual FXs, drones, sweeps, and such things.

FM8 is good for sharp and noisy sounds. If you like those FM type of leads, bells, percussion types of sound, also weird FM FXs. Also you can morph between presets (operators routing and their mod amounts). But maybe it is a bit hard to sculpt the sound you have in mind, cus it works with FM synthesis.

For more of a standard psy trance type of sounds get sylenth1. Great preset bank (above mentioned NIs have far less useful sounds for psy trance in their preset banks). Sylenth has realy great sound, very clean. It is good for leads and squelch type of sound. But I dont use it alot. I find it kinnda boring.

Also Reaktor for samplers, timestreching, weird granular effects,...

for night ambience, pads, and fx I strongly recommend:

Camel Audio Alchemy and NI Absynth.

Alchemy for the mangling and the performance pad (when you get into programming your own more complex pads this really shines)

Absynth has slightly better oscillator modulation options like FM etc etc though.

Either will see you very well indeed in this department though, if you put in the time. Personally, I find Alchemy quicker to work with, and this is very important!

For leads and the rest:

I'd suggest decent wavetable synths, largely.

Waldorf Largo and NI Massive.

Largo is perhaps a warmer sounding synth ... capable of really head ripping heaviness.

Massive is more 'digital' ... and has more flexible modulation sources.

So far everything has been very very digital in its outlook, so I'd also suggest U-He's ace, for those moments when you don't want your tune to sound like its directly beamed back from the 25th century noisecore future, but need a really good, solid, conventional synth sound.

There isnt' much you can't do with these five. These form the backbone of my productions.

"Sample based" is a good thing tho, in this case at least. Trillian is sample based and it is the reason I use it for bass a lot. The sampled VCO waveforms are top dollar!

Peace out.
