I try to play and improvise a lot of parts in my live set too. After experimenting a lot I've gone for portablity and am using Ableton Live with Discovery, Albino and H.G. Fortune's Protoplasm all loaded into different channels and played live through my midi controller. I haven't had any problems with stablity with these three synths (I have with others) and I've found the being able to switch between them and/or layer them via the "mixer" on my midi controller gives me far more sound options than I'd have with just one synth. I had some issues with Live 6, but once went back down to 5 all those went away. I also have a mess of percussion loops mapped out to the pads on my controller and can trigger those live as well. Sometimes I think having a real synth might be nice, but this set up if far more practical (and portable) for me.

Well I plan on setting up Live versions of my songs. Where I have sections that I toy with the arrangement adding parts taking parts out doing fx, etc...(using my a separate controller for just that) Then I will have sections for performing over, where I play actual instruments (synths or other instruments) to a forward moving arrangement that leads to another section for different performance. I plan performing a live part through the entire set, whether it be rearranging, or actually playing instruments.
As far as portability, I'm not too concerned because I know that I will want at least 49 keys, and would prefer 61 during performance. I'm not going to to limit my performance ability for portability. (though I may have to sometimes)
@ Jikkenteki, I may consider using software synths, though I do worry about everything running from one computer. I guess I could try for a while when practicing and see if I have problems. I just want to limit the possibility of them (problems) as much as possible.
