for snares, a gentle 'smile' shape often helps maintain a crisp but full sounding snare.

you can often cut out much more low freq than you think - forget how it sounds in isolation, listen with kick/bass, and reference!

remember that snare covers the widest frequency band out of most instruments, so its the one u probably want to eq the most
i usually like mine with not much mid... cut at 600 boost slightly at around 1200-2000 everyone is diferent...

Start with a good sample(s) - I don't usually eq my snares much more than a simple hipass and just maybe some slight 5khz presence.

yes probably the best sound advise ever is to get the source as good as possible for THAT SPECIFIC MIX
great snare can sound not in place with kick that just doesnt fit...
kind of cool trick i do is to have my kick and snare in sampler channels and try other samples when finished the track.. in some cases kick change can be all you needed
actualy most people think only of kick-bass relations when kick and snare or even hihats and bass have just the same relation - how their frequencies sound together and not alone!

usually snare hits around 250hz. cutting at 800hz will kill it comletley.
actually boost at 1.2khz sometime makes good realuts,
also boosting the high end around 10khz-12khz.

at the end, its better to load 10 different snare samples into the project and select the right one.

ding ding ding

5khz is one of the 'tender' spots on the ear - so a little of this frequency goes a long ways. I always notch my percs (and more) at 5kHz.
