Subwoofers for monitoring?

It seems that a lot of producers don't have a subwoofer in their monitoring setup. Is there any particular reason? I'm thinking it's mainly because a lot of Psy is produced in untreated studios where adding a subwoofer would be more detrimental to the mix. I think there definitely enough content in the sub range to warrant the use of one. Listening to my stuff in my friend's car with his 15" sub adds a whole different dimension to the mix that I normally miss out on (good thing it didn't sound bad on his car speakers. )

Do you use a sub? Do you think it's crucial for next-level mixing?           www.facebook.com/chemogen

I use a sub and it a pain in the ass because I can't get the placement right and don't get me started on low end frequencies while mixing and editing...The best solution is to buy a decent pair of monitors if you have the money... I have to stick with sub for now, because I'm poor...

Yeah, I have a pair of Samson Resolv65As. Maybe it's also the way my bookshelves are placed around my room (bedroom studio ftw) but my mixes seem to translate quite nicely so maybe I should letting sleeping dogs lie. Is it worth trying to do cool stuff in the sub 60Hz range with Psy?           www.facebook.com/chemogen

Hell yeah.

Un-ported monitors are perhaps the best solution for small rooms; adding a sub will increase the extension (although the bass is still there without it) but it's very difficult to get it right unless you really know what you're doing.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

can't agree with that, sub adds lots of low end meat into sound presence, with it you are able to good control low bands of your mix, good sub (studio monitor sub) is the great part of sound chain

with a sub you are building your own full range system , buying a well designed full range can be a better solution but it cost a lot !
what colin said is what i would like to try if i was starting all again (if unported is same thing as closed, sealed monitor) the k+h 0300 + add a random sub that is good but don t cost a arm and a legg , would love to hear that system.
closed monitors can have some avantage other the usall bass reflex stuff for transients response in the lower frequencies ,could be a very big avantage for psytrance and the sub will compensate for the lack of low end vs a same sized cabinet that use bass reflex

yes imo it s one of the avantage of the subs, it have very big woofer 10/11/12 maybe more inches.. you get closer low end of pa system vs a 6 or 8 inches woofer and it s cleaner in my experience. it can help for balancing the mix . i hate these tunes where the mids disapear on big pa, hard to get in trance to that sound even if its well suited for techno.
for trance compensating for our hearing curve at loud volume may be a good idea ? it may result in less flat mix ,mix with more dimension.
hearing just the beat in front and the leads in the background sux big time to me , it can hapen with bass heavy mix that sound great and phat on small speaker but the balance may not be the best for big woofers at loud volume wihtout compensation in the mids ...

Yeah, the method Colin posted is a great exercise - we had to do this a lot in college because it really is one of the best ways to tighten up your craft. Set a reference and work to it. I do tend to match the levels between my mix and the reference track though, to compensate for the mastering gain.

One of the projects I had to do was recreate the sound - from scratch - of a scene from the Transformers movie.           www.facebook.com/chemogen

sound cool man those exercices might be fun, sometimes we should try it there with a tune.
in the pasts years i have found for me a/bing is the key to get better production, a/bing all my crusial equing, compression choice (like on kick bass)but not necessary with a other tune..
for example when i tweak a synth filter ,envelops for a bassline ...when i get the sound the best i can, i duplicate the track and tweak the synth to make it sound even better by a/bing ,taht way you step up the sound/production ,you make B sounding better than A that was already sounding the best you could , then you make A sounding better than B , then you tweak B again to make it sound even better that A...sound is getting better and better and it s not placebo cause you are a/bing ,now i do this with sound that need very carreful tweaking and processing when i m not lazy. it really helps for equing sounds that matter a lot in a mix too . if it s that workflow that helped me the most the last years , understanding the power of a/bing to boost production quality...
i sarted first to use it years ago when i was a/b ing limiters and cliping for mastering, it need very carreful a/b dunno why i waited so long to bring that workflow for mixing too. it relly help imo
