Finally upgrading my studio monitors to the Adams A7's. I am in the market for a subwoofer to go with it. Does anyone have any recommendations or information on finding an accurate subwoofer?

Adams make a few subs, & they are double the price of many other active subs I've seen. I don't really know if it's worth it, and I'm not sure what to look/listen for in subwoofers for accuracy & flat response.

I'm considering getting 2 medium sized subs in the long term (one now, one later), rather than a single large sub. My searches here found that there are very few posts about subwoofers that people are using. Are most of you producers not using subwoofers?           Keep The Faith,

Why would you suggest saving for the Adam sub8?

I use the Adam Sub8 toghether with a pair Adam S2A, and im really happy with that setup. First i didn't have the sub, and had a little bit hard to mixing lowend, but now its a bit better, the sub is a great help, but i dont think its absolutely necessary to use one. After what i remember from listening to monitors last time i was at my local music dealer, i noticed the A7's was pretty punchy in the low end compared to other Adam models.

I suggest to order a Adam sub8, check it out how it works for you, and return it if you can live without it. It's pretty neat actually. It has a remote control for sub volume, and crossover frequency, so that you can adjust them when sitting in the sweepspot. make it a bit easier setting everything quickly up.

Good luck whatever you decide to do

Talking with a few folks, most people seem to think the A7's are lacking in the low end, thereby requiring a sub from the get go. Unfortunately, to listen to any of the equipment I am looking into I'd have to drive several hours.

I didn't know the Adam's sub had a remote....a nice idea indeed. I appreciate everyone's comments, thanks.

I would say it's certainly necessary to check it prior to mixdown (unless your monitors are provide a good very lowend), but not necessary to have it on all the time.           Keep The Faith,

I borrowed a sub and it made a ridiculous difference. Now I want one really bad... I dont see how anyone could properly mix or create low end without one.. unless you just don't care/aren't creating anything down there.

ie: if your bassline is only one 50hz note.. lol

Um.. really dumb question.

How do you actually add a subwoofer to the setup?

I've got basic soundcard, going digitally to a DAC and straight to my monitors over balanced cables. At what point does the sub frequency get split out?

I don't want anything affecting the sound between the DAC and speakers.

That depends a little on the equipment you have, or decide to purchase. Many subs have a built in crossover, & some thing they tend to be rubbish. Basically, you either send the signal in series (subwoofer first) or in parallel (think you'd need 2 crossovers for this).           Keep The Faith,

You will have to have something in the middle. Something of good quality, I'd say a Coleman subwoofer routing module. I wouldn't suggest connecting speakers through the subwoofer.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...
