Subliminal Psy?

The word subliminal means something that exists below the surface, or on the threshold of consciousness. The part of your mind that really controls your life exists just below the surface of your conscious mind. It is the subconscious part of your mind that must be reached in order to make permanent, positive changes.

I've come across this term 'subliminal sounds' and 'subliminal messages' alot lately, and a lil research showed me that they've been around for awhile now and have been used on us in advertisements and propaganda. They are supposedly sounds that are only heard by our subconscience.

I'd like to discuss the possibility of incorporating these sounds in psytrance with positive messages included in them. Wouldnt that add a whole new dimension to psy? Has any artist here explored this idea?

Subliminal messages have been known to appear in music. In the 1990’s, two young men died from self-inflicted gunshots and their families were convinced it was because of a British rock band; Judas Priest. The families claimed subliminal messages told listeners to “do it” in the song “Better by You, Better Than Me. The case was taken to court and the families sought more than $6 million in damages. The Judge, Jerry Carr Whitehead, ruled that the subliminal messages did exist in the song, but stated that the families did not produce any scientific evidence that the song persuaded the young men to kill themselves. In turn, he ruled it probably wouldn’t have been perceived without the “power of suggestion” or the young men wouldn’t have done it unless they really intended to.

If it could be used in another genre of music to pass on a negative message to the masses, could it not be used in psy to pass on positive messages to our subconsciouses?

Views and inputs on all of this please!

I thought rock music always had that subliminal message.. Even as i grew up listening to bands like pearl jam, sound garden, STP etc.. i have always had a feeling of a mild depression of how the world could be a better place. This may be a part of my interpretation towards the song lyrics as well, but collectively i have always felt that way about the music.
Then there is also those messages that they claim you can get by backward masking of songs like 'stairway to heaven' which is quite difficult to believe that the artist/rock band had anything to do with it really, i mean who would make a song in such a way that when its played backwards it gives a message out. Coincidence imo.

I think psy trance is music for an open mind and there should be no directions or boundaries for the mind, so that the mind can wander wherever it wants without being led to do so. such messages, if any,can be a barrier to mind expansion.

in my opinion and experience as a listener, I think that psy is subliminal music by essence. If not for spoken words, lots of sounds are just below the normal counscience threshold. That's waht makes our genre so mind expending: you have to be in a special mindset to fully experience psy music. And more than often the voice samples are reversed or barely audible, or very low in the mix, which makes them go directly to your subconsious without your judging mind interferring.

And as far as rock music or psytrance goes, subliminal does not mean something you can't perceive, but something you have to pay attention to in order to understand or be counscious. And LOTS of artists already use these techniques in our scene.

Same goes on the artworks, where you have designs that you have to look at in a certain way in order to see what it really represents.

Yes i agree on that.
i think that people listen to psychedelic trance in many different ways. Some listen to the obvious, and others go deeper.
I believe that with time people learn how to listen to psychedelic music, they search beyond the obvious, and this is where they will find amazing subliminal sounds (but not messages). gradually, these subliminal sounds will translate into beautiful images in the mind of the listeners.. but this is usually done better with the help of certain substances

I'm gonna keep it short and spammy.

For me psychedelia change my life in the PLUR sense. And for me this is what psychedelics is about, peace, love, unity, respect
..and a little paranoia

I believe that by its very nature, all psychedelic art, whether it be music, visual, or written word, contain some form of 'subliminal'or perhaps 'secret' message. The fact that the psychedelic experience can open one up so much to suggestion, these 'messages' open up to a much more conscious level. It's up to the artist what is transmitted. That's part of the fun in toying with consciousness...pushing the envelope of delivering information.
Yes, although I think that to imbue music with positive, underlying messages is a noble intention, one must consider that in essence, it is really no different than the advertisers pushing 'buy me' messages...we make the choice to listen to psychedelic music and open ourselves to these transmissions...quite a contradiction, eh? I've considered the possibilities of this, and resigned myself to the notion that this aspect of communication is best reserved for the psychedelic community...
but yeah, lots of psytrance has 'subliminal' messages.. ;-)           "Any act, if in accordance with the Will, is an act of Magick."

120bpm with no bassline has 2 beats per second, therefor, a subliminal 2Hz wave, causing relaxation and a dreamy state of mind. 150bpm with a rolling bassline has 2.5 beats per second with 3 bass notes in between, giving 2.5Hz and 10Hz subliminal waves, causing alertness and aggressive undertones the moment the bassline kicks in. A simple example of how these things are implemented at the very base of dancefloor music. Rolling basslines by definition will tend to raise the adrenaline levels far more than any other ones for this reason, and minimal bass work will be by definition much more exciting to the imagination. Hihat sequences, snares, groovy elements, effects, just on their timings, create many such waves and interactions between them.

Also a reason why people tend to go for mellower, slower grooves as they age. Adrenaline is a fine rush, but imagination by definition is more interesting and will have a longer shelf-life.
