I´ve recently followed a tutorial where i layered my kicks with a sinewave which had a frequency at 50 hz. Which frequency do you use in your music? Is 50 hz the right frequency to get that subbas in your songs?
Any recommendations when it comes to using subbas, i often think my music can get to muddy when using it.

That depend on what you want ? you can start to find your sub at 48 hz ,sometimes i use 30 hz ? if you got a freq analyzer like span you can see in the region of 20 hz there is allot of sub ,find your freq try 48 hz as start and make highcut around 204 hz , you can layer your bass also to copy your first bass and lowcut at 204 and listening carefull if its fit ,if its sounds phasy then go over the 204 en search for the ballans becarefull that you dont pas the 248 hz ,and then a highshelf at 2k for brightness ! now because you got two layers you van controll the sub how much and how less you want ! so you have to play with volume ,you can add then the 3rd bass layer with a low cut around 2 k this gives your bass a snappy sound also you can controll how you want it !
with the freq don't push it to much but slowly you add some volume or discrese volume till you hear what you like ! this is a option and ofcourse there are more ways but try this , also you layerd your kick so your kick is warm and got a fat sound so i recommend to layer your bassline's and you hear a wider fater basssound fit in with the kick !! succes and hopes it helps

dude, My advice is do not think there is a magic frequency that will work. Every song is different.
if the sub sounds good, this is right.
Try differents notes. which sound better, u got it.

Why don't you match your sub frequency with the key of your song?

like acid_drive sayd, match with key of song.

also, do you really need to add sine wave to your kick? my kicks always work @ 50-40hz so i don't need to add anything more there

in drum and bass getting the sub around 50k is a good benchmark. You can pretty much know that it will carry well on most sound systems. In trance I wouldn't worry, like the guys say if it fits the track it fits the track, a lot will depend on the bass part your using etc, but if your mixing genres like dubstep into your trance, then the sub at 50 will be ok

if you make dnb or dubstep you still need to match your sub to key of track. i mean that in dnb sub is just another instrument. but it's different kind of music where you have kick, bass & sub as 3 different instruments playing in low frequencies. even you have to put dubstep in trance, you can't just put sub @50Hz and leave it. 50Hz is G1/G#1 note. it is still musical sound and when you put sub @50Hz and you will play with bass in different notes then you make discordance ;]           http://www.beatport.com/release/cross-the-atoms/1042450
