This may be a stupid question, but I have noticed that my bassline sounds great when I have my kick track going, but my bassline sounds dull and boring when the kick track is off. Is this normal?

There are no stupid questions - only stupid answers

It is normal - coz bass and kick have to be one unit for a good groove. They have to play well together, so if one is missing, the other one is missing it's partner and will sound not that great anymore.            Signature

well if thats your problem then thats the perfect time to do a fill or something diferent, with the bass mess with filter or octave changes etc, and even a quick change up of the bassline so that it stands out and gets all up on ya face then drop the bassline with a slide going down or even up bring the kick with a cymbal or efx right back and continue the flow it will definitly get everyone's hands in the air for sure...the crowd goes wild. that's what u need to do... doctors remedy id say hehe peace brother hoped that help much late cus i join not too long ago but should help you or others with the same thoughts or problem peace!!!!

If I want to use the bass when the kick is not playing, usually (if needed) I put some notes on the bass in the place of the kick...to fill that hole...

most bass is usually dull. that's why you have to layer those strange noises over it           roll a joint or STFU :)

It sounds like you are using a Full On bassline.
Like it has been said, you can put a bass note on the kick's place or break it into a nice groove, hi-pass the section where it's only the bass running (Like Cosma did in Yok Yok for example), but whatever method you choose, then remember to use the velocity very creatively (Like when you have a normal velocity that says (Kick)-Bass(velocity at 20)-Bass(Velocity at 65)-Bass(Velocity at 50), then you can fill the kick's place with a bass-note with a velocity of 10, just a smaller value than the original "first" bass-note in your loop.
If you want to make a break-section with the bass hitting in a groovy way, then you can use the same method, 2 notes after each other, the first one less velocity than the second.

Hope it is understandable..           //Zeyon.

i love stupid bassline

very normal that bass and kick go together as one machine
sometimes u can notch down in eq in 2 seperate hz's or the ultimate sidechain then u can also put kick and bass together so bass sound good alone also           www.sattelbattle.com

i think using sidechain is the most creative way to put togather this two mosnters alltogather. the bass and the kik. with a godd constructed sidechain, also some logical eq between the two, and some slight stereo spreads in some of the higher freqs of the bass this two monsters can fit in a very potential way. using sidechain permits you to play all 16notes as u wish, and because of the side-chain all first notes will be eaten from the kik but not totaly, just in the lower freqs. this lets the "color" of the bass and it makes the Miracle. hearing the kik and bass togather without saturation...

side-chaining is the TRICK!!!! making rolling bass lines qith just 3 1/16 notes seems to me like from the remote past.. eeejejejejejeje

try to play the kick track, without the bass... doesn't it sound dull as well??
It has to be a complement to sound interesting and groovy.

By the way, you rock!
