Hello!
I'm thinking about maybe studying audio engineering or producing.
The thing that concerns me though is how high/low the possibility to actually work with it(in any way) full-time is?
Do you have any information about this? Maybe some school that has statistics over the students that graduated or something?
Or from your own experience?
Any recommendations of schools? Anywhere in the world.
Cheers! |

I think most famous is the SAE ..if your good you can get a job but competition is very hard, at least here in germany there are like 80% technicians and 20% good musicians...so the market is full..but in the USA or England there is way more room for work as Audio Engineer..
if you just want the knowledge to build up an expensive hobby ..go for it
you might got luck with work, but it even depends in wich area of Audio world you wanna be..like Movie/Post production, or Mixing/Recording Bands , Mastering or Live..it up to you ..better do a practica and talk to people who actualy are in business in your area..
good luck!

It depends on a lot of things, but i can tell you that most audio engineers start pulling cables and working their way up, learning from what they see... it doesnt matter that much where you studied, most of the time its about what you know. Of course this is in my experience so i cannot generalize, i studied in Sae and i can tell you that 80% of what i know, i learned it by my self, the good thing about schools like this is that you can practice alot with tools you might not be able to use elsewhere...like the ssl, analog tapes, really good mics etc..
but the knoledge is everywhere in the net, and the most important thing... experiment more.. read less
good luck! |

You learn how to use high end mixing desks but you might never see one again in your live..

Based on what I have heard people say about audio at SAE I would not recommend it. I guess it depends where you are, there are very good schools out there. As to finding work with audio, you have to have very good connections before you even start the course, then once you have completed the course you do as many projects as you can (usually for free until you get some decent credits). Then and when you have reached a level that is pretty much undeniably good enough for commercial productions ( needs to perk ears of listeners)you can start charging money. But don't be fooled into thinking once you graduate from super school x the job offers are flying in. Getting to work in audio exclusively is not an easy task!

I did my Audio Tech BSc at Anglia in Cambridge.
I took the Electronics path, learned a lot about digital and analog electronics, acoustics, MIDI implementation and math, instead of spending 3 years learning how to use Cubase.
On my second year I got a job as a techie at one of Cambridge's biggest venues, the Junction where I worked for 3 years, starting off from pushing flight cases, wiring mics, to doing full monitor and FOH duty. It was a great learning experience.
Do not spend you cash to go to a university just to learn how to use Cubase/Logic/Pro Tools. you can teach your self that.
If you go to university, get a proper education.
But bare in mind, its not going to be easy to get a job.
Peace out.

I just finished SAE well last day before me as well as last exam in thoery. It's a very good although hard level atleast if you do it full time.
If you really want to and you are good you can find jobs trhoughout the connections from SAE for sure.
I have a recommendation and connect to some nice studios here as foley artist and sound designer, but it is of course not 100% sure I'll go for it soon, but that is only an example of what connections between people from the audio scene can bring.
And of course I agree with Zork the most won't see a big console after this studium.
You have to really want it I guess.
