hi! was just thinking if everyone can donate a bit of his knowledge, just drop some tips and tricks, about softwares, equipment, and everything that can help that you might think not everyone knows, because people just answer to questions and sometimes there are things that you know but no one ask about it . ill start:
im once in a while open my computer, and clean it from dust. that keeps it clean and quiet. maybe everyone know that but if it will make just someone's computer to be quiet than the topic is helpfull

work on 2 or 3 different projects simultaneously, each with a different style and bpm that u like.
like 1. Dark psy
2. Dub breakbeat
3. Elektro
or any pf ur choice
so ull have a project to work on no matter what mood ure in!
Besides u could make a break from some section on the other tracks.

great tip, and thats what I do mostly...right now I'm working on 4 tracks
to add to vegetals tip: try as many plugins as you can and then decide which you really need and concentrate on them...there is also great free stuff out there like the ssl comp or fxpansion orca!
and vegetal, what exactly do you mean with ESD-protection?
I'll come up with more tomorrow...feeling a bit dizzy today https://soundcloud.com/hazak

Might not be common knowledge but when your handling computer parts you should atleast have a ESD-armband which is connected to a ground.
If you don´t then you may become a living capacitor that may discharge up to 30Kv in one spark to the component your handling, it may not kill your circuit but it will definitly decrease the lifespan of it.

Edit: psylevation: Clip it to the computercase is one option BUT only if your computer is connected to a ground. Check the poweroutlet if it has one. Or you can connect the armband to a radiator or the stove. Demand recognition for the Armenian genocide 1915

ESD=Electro Static Discharge? I think you just clip yourself to the case of the computer, so you don't let off static discharge and fry a component.
the 3 most important tools when mixing:
1.Panner
2.EQ
3.Compression
Also in regard to mixing, create your track with a mental image of the 3D space you have to work in. Don't put 2 sounds in the same place if at all possible.
When creating a new sound, thing about what frequencies are available, and create your new sound to fit there.

if you want a good reference for sound production on your monitors, upload an extremly high quality track to your project (better if its the same style of music), and once in a while compare your mix with it. that way the small problems with your mix are more clear, and you get to know your monitor better...

Try to avoid having the electricity cables running side by side with the audio cables. If you have to run them near each other, try to make them cross in 90 degrees (so they won't run parallel).
Use balanced cables where possible - especially if you have active monitors.
Take all your studio electricity (computa, synths, outboard etc) from one socket in the wall, it helps a lot with ground loops - be careful if you have lots of equipment not to overload the power line (e.g if the lights in your house flickers when you turn your monitors and amp on it might be a good idea to call an electrician...)

agree with the electricity cables away from audio cable.. also, it generate by induction a 50Hz staying frequency going through your audio wires.
i'm not really agreeing with having 3-4 tracks under working process at the same time.. i would more say, start something, finish it before starting something different.
maybe come back after couple of listens when you finished it, to correct some parts... but having many tracks going at the same time makes me not finishing couple of them.... loosing their mood.
my tip today would be to put your speakers on something as compact/hard as possible.
my speaker stands are filled up with sand to avoid any vibration with surrounding facilities.
know your gears, as Elad said... better to have couple of stuffs you know very well than many you don't.

le barde, its not really like starting 3-4 similar tracks...more like working on different genres at once, so you can always work on the project you feel the mood to!
look, I'm working on a twilight track, a dub track, and some kind of daytime fullon...and I cant really say that I never finish them

I can't believe that noone has mentioned acoustics and monitors.
Before you do anything make sure that the room you mix in has a relativly flat response. If your room has some serious "boost and cuts" this will ofcourse distort your perception and you will compensate for this when mixing wich is bad.
Don't buy foam; this will only help mid/high freq but you can build you own acoustic treatment from rockwool wich is really cheap. You can even get coated compressed rockwool wich is made for acoustic treatment.
When your room is treated don't waste money on bad monitors. Get some decent ones and get to know them . |

sorry peter, i had a glitch in my head seeing tsabi posting what you said.
i was having many tracks at the same time before as well, and since my last studio reset i start to avoid this... because i probably have more than 30 tracks that will never see the day.
