Many artists nowdays are using only PC and software.
Its possible to produce this way However my personal opinion hardware sounds better. I also like the feeling of tweaking knobs and controlling the sound.

its the joy you feel when you see your basic computer passing into machine+machine+machine setup along with you skills development and passion for materializing thoughts via sound. |

i have a MIDI studio
i can see myself selling my mixer, efx
and some synths BUT i can't see myself writing music on a computer only.
3 synths is a minimum for me, i'd say

in my opinion, a good computer, good soundcard, midi controller is all you need. for mastering, maybe you need some special equipment, but afaik mastering is seldom done by the artist himself. |

Or one workstation synth.
I'm selling some 4 synths to buy a virus TI.
Anyway imo most things can be done with software today. I still like hardware tho, it 's easier to tweak and it looks sexier.
But I guess it's all personal preference and available budget.

Well, when I started to write electronic music back in 1995,and released my first album and singles in 1997, the PC was fast and strong anough to trigger only midi notes.
Actually, one of the biggest wishes we all had is to have a computer fast anough for using as much as vst effects and virtual instruments as possible.
Nowdays, as we all know computers run vst like stuff just as we all wished and dream of, so most of today composers and producers use mostly virtual studios, I say mostly because it is always good to have at least one piece of hardware, I sold all my hardware equipment long time ago, but I will always keep my Virus A for example and a midi keyboard.
For my first album MAGIC FOR ETERNITY, released in 1997 by Krembo records, I used all hardware.
* E-mu morpheus
* Peavey keyboard
* Roland mvs-1 vintage module
* Ensoniq EPS 16+
* and a couple of more goodies.
For my second album FACE ADAPTOR also released by Krembo and co written wiyh Yuli fershtat aka B.L.T, we combined all our hardware and the list added a nice JP-800,some TB emulator- Freebass.
Yamaha an1-x and some more goodies again.
Today, I spoke with Yuli not long ago and he also sold his old equipment and went for a virtual studio, for a long time already.
My best advice is, to buy a good pair f monitors,a very good soundcard and a fast PC with a midi keyboard and you can always add some hardware such as Nord Lead, Access Virus, Wadlorf etc.
Work audio as much as you can since midi has a lot of trouble with timming.
Cheers. |

Yeah, I used to have the module version with FlashBank. One of the best pieces ever made, amazing delays and effects! |
