I am planning to setup my own lil studio at home...!
I currently have 2 workstations(1 desktop, 1 laptop) running AMD AThlon and Intel Core 2 Duo 3 Ghz (running windows xp and vista respectively), 1 Casio WK-500 (Yes, i know casio sucks), sennheiser hd-215 closed ear headphones.
I am planning to purchase equipment soon, but am confused as to what exactly i should buy next..i think good sound card (plz advice), monitors and the rest..
Need your opinion on what models to go for n for which equipment.
my room is not acoustically treated, and i dont have the resources to get it done anytime soon, so thats out...
thanks in advance.
peace.
No... no more scientists, no more laboratories, no more experiments, I thought you`d be able to understand that. No more! |

Get a decent soundcard, the best monitors you can buy and do as much acoustic treatment as possible/ necesarry. Then get the rest you possibly need.

I'll add - in this specific order.
Treatment is an integral part of monitoring. Without treatment your new shiny monitors will be as good as nothing.

thanks for the prompt replies...
1) what is the most cost effective solution for acoustic treatment..?
2) What monitor speakers should i get..? My room is about 12ft x 12ft in dimension.
3) I have just begun my sound engg course, so I was planning on getting the MBOX 2 MINI, so I can use PROTOOLS on my computers(for practice). Will this be a good decision from a psy-production perspective, or should i go for a different soundcard? if yes, why..?

these days a macbook pro and a good headphone is enought to make great tunes , i would do that if i was starting it all again and add more stuff with time , room acoustic treatment monitors and soundcard like mentioned above.
monitors not super expensive that seems great are the yamaha hs80 ,that and a headphone like dt 880 pro or sennheiser hd 650 i guess could cover your monitoring needs for years (with adding room treatment) |

Build your own basstraps and panels. Cost effective, but time consuming.

Can protools host vst effects? If yes, then you have no reason to change, especially if this is what you're studying in your course.

You're saying this as if a macbook pro is some cheap stuff you can get.
You can get an equal-performing pc for much cheaper.

IMO Protools rocks at any case, the compressors eqs and reverbs - lets say all whats there pisses on the others .. only the synthesizers... they are wack - there the others piss on protools..
Best combo imo is protools as master with another sequencer..(logic,sonar,cubase are killa )
BUt Id recommend you to forget protools if you start and wanna produce psytrance or electronic music than you will have a more comfortabe beginning without pt for sure.
Protools alone sucks for psytrance for sure.It offers only some subtractive synths and a few machines more ,more a joke or a nice start.Anything else has better synthesizers.
I also had a chance to get very cheap the mbox2 but imo its not worth the money since you can use now any other interface for pro tools ,times have changed.
--but than .. you say you begun your sound eng. course - so protools will be for sure dominant there - so its defo not a bad idea actualy to buy mbox since than youll get the original pt version, make sure to ask for the newest in case they give you the 8th.Love protools its the mother of all daws.

Did re-wire Logic into Pro-Tools in one of my university classes. Logic soft synths with DRM plug ins and PT audio editing FTMFW!
Peace out.

@Time Traveller...yes, i happened to sumble upon some new soundcards that do allow Protools to run. I personally find the Mbox 2 mini to be an unnecessarily expensive affair. As for DAWs, I am the most comfortable with FL Studio 9.
@Mike A and @disco hooligans
Those pads sure look promising...as of now i think I will settle for the M-Audio BX8A's, as everthing else, is way out of my budget...and eventually add those pads...
One of my interior designer friends suggested some really economical glasswool treatment for a conference room, so going to check how that is done...
In the meanwhile, itd be great, if you sould give me a list of good soundcards in the 200$ to 350$ price range.
Thanks.

it all depends the surface/stand and monitors , it could make the sound worst in some case too
a way to hear if somone need it is to ask someone to take the monitor in their hands and listen. and put it back on the surface and see if it resonate at some freqs or unwanted stuff hapen. |
