I'm looking at getting a new pair of speakers just for home DJing use and am wondering whether I should get a pair of studio monitors or PA speakers. Will just be using them in my living room for DJing. The room's not treated obviously. I'll probably have them either on the DJ table or mounted on the wall at ear level above the table. Are studio monitors good for that purpose, or should I get a pair of smaller PA speakers? Maybe a couple of 5" monitors and a sub, or just a pair of 8" monitors? I currently have two big home stereo speakers with 15" woofers. Any recommendations would be helpful.

OK, but what if the monitors cost around the same as the regular speakers? |

I don't really understand your question.
What are you trying to achieve by buying a set of small PA speakers.. volume over clarity?
If you intend to have a few mates over and DJ in your living room, then get some PA speakers, they'll go louder than most studio monitors and accentuate frequencies for a club type sound (probably for the worse, but you'll get more volume). PA systems are focused on high SPL rather than great sound.
If you just want to hear yourself DJ you can use anything.
I own a pair of JBL MRX525's which I hire out and they are VERY loud and pretty excellent quality for PA. I would recommend anything in the MRX500 range.

Thanks guys, I think that answers my question. The only reason I was considering monitors was to save on space in my new apartment. The speakers I have now are pretty big, and I'd rather not get something like those JBL's, as they're basically the same size as what I already have. I don't need anything that professional that I'd need to rent out or use outside my house, as I have access to that when playing out. Any recommendations for small, bookshelf size speakers that would go pretty loud, with good sound? I might get two small speakers and a sub. Cost needs to be significantly less than $1000 USD, as I can just get a pair of these and an amp at wholesale cost for that price:

id go for studio monitor like Event or Tannoy
nothing too fancy but will give you clarity that is not available on hi-fi speakers
also they are hell loud dont worry bout that |

With monitors you will hear your mistakes, so you'll end up being a better dj.

Having both myself, I would suggest would regular PA speakers. You'll definitely get more bang for your buck, and I think you'll enjoy playing on PA speakers more than playing on studio monitors.
