Hi there,
Recently I've been constantly thinking over ordering a custom deck for my home studio. After searching over internet sites I've found several types of desks commonly used in the recording and mixing studios. However I think there should be options more suitable for small home studios, like mine, where I want to place my display (or two), keyboard + mouse, a midi controller and a rack with some other devices.
Maybe some of you already faced this issue, and can give some advices, show your solutions, photos or provide links on topic?
What should one keep in mind before ordering a custom desk?
Peace!

Thanks guys. Quik Lok's solutions have some good ideas but they are not the best option for me.
Argosyconsole is not for psytrance
Fame is afordable and, well, nice; in the end I will order something like that, I guess.
Would like to know what do you guys own, or most of us just use obvious kitchen tables?

Yes, that's a good option because you can build a really comfortable working place. But before building a custom desk one should know construction details and tricks and tips.

if you can get your hands on some office style desks that piece together (commercial grade). I have one of these. its a corner unit with 2 8 foot ends off the corner unit and lockable filing cabinet. hutch optional. of course ideally you wont want to be in a corner. |

I usue three Ikea desks. work fine, big one in the middle for my PC & midi, two small ones each side that hold some FX gear and my one and only Nord synth.
For my speakers I made some stands out of wood and metal with a bit of help from my dad.
When my house is finished I"m going to do a proper studio in the basement, I have had a studio designer come over and meet with the architect to help come up with a good idea as I"ll also have my home theatre down there as well.
I hate you, you hate me, we are all so hap hap happy! |

How many of you guys keep your studio monitors (not LCDs) on your tables?
For my desk, I ended up just picking up this very large table top from Ikea and a couple of legs for it (the cool thing about this is you can chose from a bunch of them, getting exactly what you need for the right price).

Obviously there's no keyboard tray, but it's really big and really cheap and I think it will work great for me.
Right now I have my Mackies sitting on auraflex mopads on my desk. I see someone selling used custom made wooden monitor stands and I'm debating buying them. The plus side is that I will decouple the monitors from the desk and decrease desk reflections. The (possible?) downside is that the stands are pretty tall, so the monitors will be about 30cm above their current position. And currently the tweeters are right at the ear-level, which is optimal.
My question, is it really problematic if I have the monitors higher up and pointing downwards (since I can adjust how they are pointing with the mopads)?

IKEA is great but we don't have them in Ukraine. Unfortunately. They can't deal with local authorities for over 4 years already, maybe even more.
I ended up ordering custom desk from a furniture building company.
