Hi guys,
I was wondering if any of you have/had this same problem. I can write a mad loop of music for 32/64/128 bars that I am very happy with but when it comes to making a track out of it I eventually just fail and lose the essence of what I had in that loop.
I feel like I don't know how to build up to/progress from that loop?
I was wondering if anyone else had this problem? How did you get around it? Any tips or help at all is extremely appreciated! Literally running around in circles here, has been happenning for too long a time now, I really wanna finish one goddamn track!!!
SOS people!!!

Hahaha! bro....
im in the same exact boat as you, like exactly.....
ive been "producing" for 3 years now and im on the same loop..never finished a full track...i know the reason though but i just dont do it......
what it is, is that we are lazy...
a sound producer shouldnt be lazy...we have to push our selves the first time to start a track and build the intros and breaks and outros and shit like that...
once we actually do it once or twice, we will have figured out a work method to work with or a template...but the thing is im so god damn lazy to fuckin work out the workflow...
However, summer has just started and im gonna build my first track, even if im too lazy, im gonna push myself because if i dont im gonna jump out of the balcony soon...
peace my brother and good luck
let me know if you figure something out that i havent and we will work together to fix this embarrassing habit of looping shit for an hour, get all excited cuz it sounds sick then get so bored of the fuckin loop that you forget completely what the hell you are making in the first place...
peace

Lol I agree with you to at least some degree Thing is though, I am not lazy to do the loop so why do I suddenly turn lazy when it comes to making the entire tracks?? I am happy to sit and work on itros and build ups abut they never come out right and eventually the power and essences that I had in my loop are gone cos I have not built up to it right?
I mean I can make loops sound good so why can i not make an intro sound good?! Or progress from the loop well??
I dunno maybe we are lazy heh and we just gotta keep on trying! Which is what I intend to do! But if anyone out there has some advise in the mean time for us that also be helpful!
I am more than ever excited to write a track, I really HAVE TO do it!!!

A good way I've found if I get stuck is to drop down to some basic elements and start building up on something new, maybe change the bassline and start adding new synth elements and drums.
Also try and use a bunch of little synth stabs and fx at the beginning instead of that killer synth part, then bring it in later.
Split up 2 synth sounds that are playing together, play each individually, then bring them together later.
Add fx and swooshes to make the single parts more interesting. Also think about simplifying the part then bringing it back to what it was gradually.
I've been through it a lot, I can see where I get stuck, but really you just have to have some discipline and make yourself move on.

its easy...imagine you are standing on the dancefloor at a huge festival with massive sound somewhere in the deep deep jungles with your favourite dancing shoes.......what do you want to hear coming from the speakers so that you can pull off your freakiest moves, breaks, spins, leaps etc etc.......and then just put that onto a sequencer.

well if u have a loop going for 128 bars then I suggest some contrast. Progression is about change, not more of the same.
there are many ways to create contrast, change the mood, up or down by changing:
rhythm (faster or slower, or mod the pieces)
tonality( change the scale or add some more parts in different scales)
harmonic dynamics (use less or more chords)
change melody contour( make it go up instead of down)
Change tambre (different patches or add voice??)
Add or remove some consonance or dissonance.
And more that I cant think of right now.
Contrast is what good musicians pull off expertly while balancing expectations of the crowd and "surprise" the crowd in an unforgeteable way. All the great artists put surprises in the music to keep the audience guessing. |

Try not to judge your track too much while it's being built !
Once it's about to be finished sit back, have a joint and listen to it as if you were the audience dancing and then you can judge it and change something that did not go well with your buzz.jeje!

It's all in your head!!!
That's about it really. What you have is a bad habit which happens to many of us when we start working with a loop. The trick is to try not to listen too much as you are creating.
Always remember that anything is better than nothing so even if you apply the shittest idea to get moving forward from where you are then it's a step forward.
Break the habit, then get creative. |
