practice, practice, practice. recommending a plugin or giving a little tip is not going to replace years and years of experience. just keep doing it and learn from your mistakes. you'll get better and better!           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

Try to figure out which part of the sound needs to be there and which part is making other sounds less clear. So for example cut everything below 100-130 of all sounds except bass and kick when they are running. In a break you can bring back those freqs if it sounds good.

But I think your issue here is more the mixing than the eqing.           soundcloud.com/supergroover

i read someone saying this once :you eq as good as your room acoustic is and it s quiet true at one point

equing skill is a lot about the room you are in and the monitoring condition, for example with a response of +10/-10 db from 40 to 12 khz it s a bit random to eq.. you can get used to it and learn the room and monitors..that can take years and you will never get as good result as in a great room imo , eq is as hard as your room acoustic is bad

or you could just buy a really nice pair of headphones and a great headphone amp, and negate the room entirely! definitely the wiser choice if you are on a lower budget, i reckon. my hd600s translate really well to my ATCs.           http://hermetechmastering.com : http://www.discogs.com/artist/Gregg+Janman : http://soundcloud.com/babaluma

i use fabfillter pro-q for most of my eqing. there are some really great eqing videos around, just watch a few and practice, and use your ears not your eyes.

I think you need to focus on getting best possible mix with only 3 things: volume, pan and tweaking synth patches properly. Simply put, if you already have a low-mid growling lead going along with rhythm and bass, ur mix probably won't need another low-mid lead.

With eq processing you change natural timbre of a sound, even if this is a synthesized sound. Sometimes this change is for good, sometimes it is mandatory to eq things out to get clean mix, but in my opinion, if you have a chance to tweak the sound further to make it sit / cut better - do that first. Basically, without proper composition (which in our case means synthesizing new sounds and arranging them) it even might be not possible to get a well mixed track. It is mixing / mastering engineers promote zillion of different eqs. But they need those, because they cant change the presets Musicians and composers don't eq too much.

However, if you are sure you tweaked the sounds to the finals, proper eq might help. I would recommend checking out a video by my fellow Andy Vax "Mixing secrets". It is avail in Eng on YouTube. There he describes in which cases what to do with eq. My personal eq of choose are UAD's Cambridge, Ex1, and pulteq.

Makus took my words! Like I told you, EQ'ing is overrated if you have high quality instruments and good musicians. These are the 2 most important aspects of music production, any genre or style.
If you use high quality vsts or good hardware you don't need to EQ much, just simple cuts at lower frequencies and even that can be fixed on the synth itself most of the times.           Free album out now:
