Hmm.... Track structure for me is incredibly important... I have found when I write I like building to a point where stuff goes a little "apeshit" where it's filled with sounds and anything else I add to that section would be incredibly too much, then dropping it back to it's basic elements or to nothing at all... I then repeat the process with some new sounds mixed with a few old sounds till just before it starts to sound like the first part of the track and then take it in a completely new direction... And that's usually takes up the first 4-5 minutes of the track... I do try to add variation on this too, sometimes I will have a breakdown after the first part and go completely crazy with a new lead for a little bit, or I won't have a breakdown at all.... But I am a firm believer in change... I usually use several different basslines in my stuff, but I actually am experimenting with a song where the bassline doesn't change... It's something new for me because it's the complete opposite of what I normally do. But the biggest thing I can say about formulas is to switch it up every once in a while... If you are used to doing one thing all the time, try something else or do it another way...           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

That's a good synopsis there greg. It offers direction without subscribing to a particualr foruma per se. I guess that's why you totally suck as a produer

I think arragement in the age of the cookie-cutter has gotten well....i just said it!!!

Intention is important here with arrangement....do you want to get the crowd to 'throw da hanz in the air?' or go deep and trance people out subtly. I'm more interesed in the second, so I go the hypnotic-build-over-time route.

maybe a formula isnt so bad, if you created the formula. but i have a hard time supporting the use of formulas that are simple a "ctrl+c, ctrl+v"

...but to each thier own.           The IsraTrance MySpace Group:

I reckon the easiest and most effective way to find the formula of a track is by using virtual DJ. Not only does it show you where the kick & bassline is throughout the tracks, breaks, builups, etc, but it also shows you if the track you made has tight or muddy bass, or if you have to many breaks with too few 'stomping sessions'.

It's nice cos you can 'see' your entire track, similar to a cubase audio file but with much less hassle and a more visualy easy way of 'finding the formula'

You can download a trial version from their website, i forget the name though.
