the best approach is to listen to some of your favourite tracks and see how the structure is building up
take ideas from it and put it on your music

use a track you like as a "guide" this will help in the first few time for sure! just open it as another channel and import it..... try to follow the build of it. after that you will see what you like and what you can do diffrently.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

with all due respect, even chaos has a formula.           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

perhaps youre correct. in fact, i tend to agree. but with the subject at hand, i dont think a formula would be the "ideal creative tool."           The IsraTrance MySpace Group:

funny this comes up - my knowledgeable friend/resident trance historian was playing some older stuff for me the other day (first x-dream album) trying to tell me something about "the original formulas" etc etc...

can anyone here speak to this? meaning:

what are classic examples of older tracks/albums/comps that are the foundation of these "formulas"?

furthermore, where do you see the influence of these foundations in today's artists/tracks/sounds?

it's very naive to say such a thing.
music without structure usally sucks. I think that you meant to say 'I make my own structure'. unless you want to make music only for yourself, I suggest you'll follow something you like.
there are formulas for almost any kind of music, and we follow them directly or indirectly. there is still enough room for creativity and knowing the formulas can only help. for example, knowing the common structure for a dance track can help you make a good dance track even if you'll go ahead and change some of the basic structure.

I am with Surrender, take one(better some) of ur fav. tracks and lock how they are organized. U can also listen it sometimes and write down when what is happening e.g. when the intro ends, the bass starts, breaks, perc lines change. There is really much happening in a good produced track, but ur production don't need to be destroy it with a 'unclear' structure.

On the other i think what Ringo Gringo means. Don't stuck to 16er blocks or 32 blocks. Be creative with breaks and changes in ur tracks. But follow a story that the listener can understand.

i also think, that its very important for a track, to have a good structure.
i often load some songs I really like in an extra channel, and then i make a cut on every break and every different part. then i color them (try to find a system, where you see the tension of the song in your different colors), and after that I try to lean the structure of my track on this color-system.
imo you get the best results by combining the best parts of more tracks, because of this combination, your track gets his own structure.

i never tried to copy, for shure a "formula" is important, but you dont need to copy it out of any other track - if you love this kind of music you will have a formula in you r head

read a tip on this ages ago in this forum. import a track that you like - use the audio editor in cubase/nuendo and create regions that you can label.

thats helped me a lot in my structure

another good tip is to take a track that u like, load it into ur sequencer and look for its structure

U can cut it up and color it and make regions
