The track should be compatible to mono in the end. Don't forget this. All FX should be heard in mono too. If not - it is a bad mix. Maybe someone would listen to it on a kitchen-radio

It is not good if it sounds like dry desert in mono or there are problems with phase extinctions.

also considering the fact that almost any PA around (clubs and live PA) is MONO.

I don't think you should be trying to force things to sit together. I think things like eq and panning should only really be used to polish things up and make it sound even better... but of course there are no rules... if it sounds good! But you should most definetly make sure it sounds good in mono!

if things occupie the exact same freq sepctrum the only thing i can think of is to not use them at the same time or seperate them by panning, or use different reverb and or delay settings, or change the timbre of one sound with flanger or chorus or some other kind of modulation... hmm...

of course EQ is a way to sculpt the sounds,
i say do what works if it sounds good...
lots of stuff live in the same freq spectrum, its a hard work to get all sounds clear...
