Most of the time i make music inside the head, and then build it on the computer. Not the whole track of course, but some core stuff, like melody, overall feeling and idea etc..
Sometimes i come across the following problem. Say, i have a melody in my head, it seems nice for me, but i'm not sure if I have invented it, or have heard somewhere before! Especially, if i like the melody and it is beeing played inside the head for a long time, I become very unsure and afraid to use it =))

i can definitely relate to that. but i think if you really try to identify it and you still can't place it, then you shouldn't worry too much about it. there's a million songs with the exact same chord progressions (shit, look at 12-bar blues). same metal riffs, riding that E string. same motifs in classical music. it's just inevitable, since we are only dealing with 12 distinct notes here.
i think the important part is how you present this melody. what plays with it. what comes before it. what comes after. there's still endless variations with that. and even within the melody itself the phrasing can make a huge difference.
only worry about this if you can actually identify where it came from and it's such a distinct melody. and even then that doesn't necessarily mean you can't use it. people do some really creative things with remixes/cover songs, no? |

I came up with a great melody away from the computer, when I got back to the studio I decided to use Z3ta to play it, only to discover it was the first arpeggio preset.

that's hilarious.
@Collin - Ah, good ol' Oscar.
of topic, but it made me think of DJ Shadow - Endtroducing ... a brilliant collection of tiny stolen snippets. |

onething is sure, if you got a melody you bring to computer what you really like from beginning... you will notice that you just have to switch some few notes and then you know from where you got this melody...
happened alot with metal riffs for me.
you like the melody so much because you allrdy know it

indulge yourself in deep state of trance by using meditation techniques to clean your mind from external influences and dig your melodies from the depths of collective subconsciousness, this will keep you away from being a copycat..
or in other words, stay away from arpeggios in z3ta, build your own or at least don't start your search from preset No. 1

love u Colin
best thing that helps me build a melody is to push play and jam on the keyboard with a simple piano or one pulse oscillator starting on my fundamental and messing with scales/chords/arpeggios from there on, following the vibe of the track.
You always come up with something good and while making a tune for a specific part, i believe you have to play a lot of different chords to find the exact feeling you want to give for making interesting or find the exact notes you want to detune etc (takes more time but rewards you imo)
