Well I dont think that it should hurt unity if u use every track different tools as long as these tools in aspect of frequencies have the similarity...
You have to remember that musicians in the end of the day are human beings and so they have their own 'likes' and 'dislikes'.. So if I come out of this assumption, I will come to the conclusion that even if one tries to make as much various basses and kicks as he can.. still it will be in the range of sounds his brain likes.. And there will be similarity.
I most of the time dont use same basses and kicks, I have a few that I like of the kicks and basses are most of the time different. The general feel of the sound still stays the same. It is not as much as knowledge in sound engineering as the fact that we are to certain patterns, and the fact that we choose different tools to work with, only makes the listener enjoy more from variety in our toolboxes but the general output will be mostly from the same kind
