In order to make a good bassline you also need general knowledge about sound and music - which is also gained through making things other than basslines.
Just make full tracks, a perfect bassline with a sucky track on top isn't much.
Work, make music - put less work into the bassline and more work into the music itself.

This is so damn true...

...but when out of the ashes of trance an all-bassline genre emerges us lazy tards who just make percussion and basslines all day are going to be kings!

I think that as far as it goes for trance, good bl sound and good kick sound can make a track rise or fall , of course the all music around (fx ,pads , arrpeg' ,etc) is very important too but bassline and kick is like the
basis for all the trance structure.

let me compare it to D&B or Jungle , you cannot make this music with a lousy drums
sounds and structure because drums are the basis for this kind of music.....

anyway i'll say it again after you have your foundation for the tracks (bl,kick) you need to show the musical side of you.

I would look at it like two sections that are depend of each other , there is no good track without a good powerful kick,bl section which give the power to the track ,and there is also no good track without the higher (pad,fx lead ,etc..)section which give the "story" to the track.

The importance to the track IMO is equal 50% to each secion , one couldn't live without the other and create a good track.

hehe in fact I would go further : stop making trance! Well, maybe not 'stop', but writing other kinds of music for a change I think gives you a much better perspective when you go back to trance. Oh and by 'different' I dont mean 'psychedelic breaks exactly the same as trance but with a different kick pattern' hehe

I didn't say don't work on basslines, just saying that if you can't do a bassline try to do other things instead..

how do you spend time on basslines? they get shat out like nothing? they're so god damn easy to make! heh load up an sh101 or juno and play part of the scale of the whole track, then do some transpositions and u ahve a dope bassline. How do people sepnd time on basslines if everyone's basslines nowadays soudn the same? is it cuz softsynths can't shit out basslines like analog can?

btw your melodies shoudl be yoru basslines some of the time seperating melody from bassline is VERY bad!=P which is why tracks made that way sound very *static*
