I've been playing around with one of the excellent tips posted by Colin OOOD for side chaining a kick and bassline using waves C1 comp. The method Colin posted works fine for mono bass & kick but what would be the best way to side chain a stereo bassline??
Up to now, I've only been able to figure out a rough work around using 2 group channels and splitting my stereo file into two mono files, sending the kick to both (via aux sends), but I don't think this is the best way of doing the job.
Anyone got any better ideas or know of a side chain compressor plug in that can work in stereo (in my old studio, I would just have linked both sides of the Drawmer compressor and the kick would s/c both channels, but I can't find a plug that does this).
Thanks in advance, and again to Colin OOOD for a excellent technique and attitude towards sharing knowledge (big slap on the back dude!) |

There's a DirectX plugin package by a company called dB Audioware, and the compressor in that has 4 sidechain channels which you can use to cross-compress two tracks. It works in mono and stereo.
Put the compressor (I can't remember its exact name right now but I think it's called the "Dynamics Processor") on both tracks, and on the track you want to use as a sidechain make sure the compressor is set up just to pass-through audio unchanged (or you can use this compressor to actually squash the sound, if you like), ie. make sure the gain is at 0 and the ratio is at 1:1 and the limiter is off. Then click the sidechain send button on the left of the plugin; the letter 'A' should appear. Click it again and the A will change to B, C and then D. These are your sidechain busses. Reset it so that it says A again.
Insert the same compressor on the track you want to be compressed by the first, and click the sidechain recieve button till it says A (ie the same sidechain buss as in the first plugin). The blue input level meter on the left of the plugin should now be showing the level of the track sending to the sidechain, rather than the audio actually going through the compressor, and it is this sidechain that the second compressor will use to squash the second track.
Set parameters to taste as with my description of C1 sidechain compressing (or any of the others that are described on the forum).
Hope this helps.

How exactly do you want the stereo to work? You want each channel to affect the corresponding channel ?
If you split your bassline into 2 mono channels, you can use 2 compressors and put it side chained on another stereo split to mono channel targets.

Trip- My bassline comes out of the vsti in stereo, it also has two delays (one on 4ths and the other on 8ths, panned hard L&R). I'd like to keep the effect from the vsti (rather than re-creating it after the bass has been side chained, this allows the compressor to reduce the effect volume and not muddy up the space created for my kick).
I'd like to use my mono kick channel to control both left and right channels of my bassline rather than having to mix the whole bass to mono and loosing the movement created by the hard panned 8th & 4th delays). Your idea for splitting the bass into independant left and right mono files is how I'm currently working, I just wanted to try another option to see how much difference there is (I think it may sound more natural if I can get the stereo compression working rather than 2 mono's hard panned, plus, my pc is very slow, so the less CPU I can use, the better!)
Colin OOOD - I'll take a good look at the plug you've mentioned, (I think I've got it somewhere). Hopefully, this will sort the problem and I can finally get the track mixed
Thanks to you both for your ideas and thought dudes |

Colin is there any way to use cutoff to create same bass'n'kick sidechain ? I mean automate cutoff of Kick and Bass channels that way so they won't "touch each other .
Thanks |
