Reason lacks good kicks for psytrance, so the first step I would go about is to get a bunch of psy-kicks to use. You could of course make your own kicks in subtractor, but the easiest way to get started is downloading kick samples.
For leads, pads, percussion and everything in between, it's just a matter of creativity. Reason is light on the CPU, so you can put up combinators and fill them with junk; several synths, samplers, effects and so on.
After a while trying to produce psytrance in Reason4 i discovered that you can achieve a lot of "psychedelic effects" by using the matrix pattern sequencer and routing it unconventionally. It's just a matter of experimenting and you'll get the hang of it.
The con about Reason is that you can't use VST's, and for compressing bass, or EQ'ing stuff, pro audio-vst's can do wonders compared to the signal-processors in Reason.

I have to agree! Started making electronic music in Reason, learnt a lot from that, but after switching to Live (w/rewire if needed), there's no turning back. "External instrument" in live is genius! Then you can use the reason instruments as if they were a part of Live, and just have reason running in the background. No use in fiddling around in the two programs! But at the end of the day i think all the VST's I run sounds better and all of reason together. |

yeah i also started with reason gg...
as soon i switched to cubase, i hated it^^
i also suggest ableton live over cubase for starting.
you will be faster and have everything you need also well displayed. if you understand ableton live you may try cubase...
you also can do everything with it... littlebit more complicated (no drag and drop lol) but in the end cubase is my choice (until now).
google "tom cosm" , you wont learn faster production from begining anywhere!
cheers

Is cubase much more efficient for creating psytrance kicks and basslines, and how effective is it for just starting off ? |

When you start off don't worry about creating your own kicks, rather use a sample. I've yet to create a kick that sounds good IMO.
Also, Cubase comes with the VB-1 synth that has been used for psytrance basslines for many many years.
VB-1 is very simple, once you get the hang of VB-1 you can start experimenting with cronox, trilogy, alien303, sylenth1 etc etc.
