I usually start with kick + bass, then perc.
Then add some sounds, leads. Generally try different ways of using the same sounds, as to create multiple parts I could use for a track.
Once I have a couple of cool parts I like, I start arrangement, then just keep expanding the track, adding small elements if I need them and trying to improve transitions. etc. |

I used to start off with the kick and bassline, but nowdays I am always in search for some loop, could be anything... from some clavinet loop off a '70s cop show, to some vocal, to a sitar lick.
Then I find the best scale in the bassline, I can, to go well with it.
Starting off with the kick and bassline, is a bit mono-dimensional. Some times I just find that the layered bassline, with more than one oscillators and varying waveforms, with long gliding notes, fits the loop better than a conventional 16th saw bassline.
