I usually start somewhere.
ie: kick - bass - perc - sounds - arrangement - tidying up the sounds as the track comes along |

bass always first , random kick might be there for the 'click' feeling.. choose the scale.. then choose the kick that compliment that bass and notes.. since all kicks i have are quite nice but match to different combo's.. and go with the flow

best way is get kick and bass and drums nailed, as in 90 - 95 % fully mixed. Then get creative with the leads, and just go for it untuil you finish the tune. When writing the leads I don't worry too muc h about stopping and mixing everything perfectly, since I find that kills my creative excitement, and so makes it hard to finish the tune. So best to charge for the end with the arrangement, and then come back and perfect the leads/effects/ pads etc etc. Once you get the drums and bass solid you have the foundations on which to build the house so the rest of the sounds, with a low cut on em should be pretty close to how you want em!

kick then bass then percu in a loop of 4 bars, then i stretch it to 8 bars and start to work on the synths till it become a kick ass 8 bars.
when it s a kick ass 8 bars i forget that i have created that loop and i follow that step 2 more time ( i add more 2 8 bars loop whole new but that will fits in the first i have created )
there i ll have 3 different parts for the track.
now i can stretch each 8 bars loop to create the "story" of the track . and lastly i ll create the breaks, intro + mix , end + mix , add loop fx and percu samples to fit empty parts of the track etc etc etc
hope i have helpt
see u around.

I had been doing kick+bass then percussion first, but for the one I'm starting now, I made a lead first. I think this way may work out well. I've got a million kick samples that it's easy to fit one into the "main" idea in the track.
We'll see how this goes...
