and a keyboard.i dont record much live instruments since i dont have a good sound card. i usualy work with midi. how should i go about the software. i mostly use reason and fruity loops. and sometimes use cool edit pro. what would you suggest?

practice, practice, practice...
then the answer what you need next comes automaticly. your studiosetting is pretty good, fruity and reason are great tools to learn everything. later when you have money, you can go for a more complex system like logic, cubase, sonar(i mention it here, because otherwise undertow would be.. )

i recommend starting with cubase/logic right away... and the rest i can concur with kitnam about practicing           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

Very good answer Kitman.
Just take your time maximjou. Find the limitations of your current setup, program(s). Then you will automaticly discover what tools you feel you need to project the music on your head. Don't let other people tell you what you need only when you have a more clear idea of what you wan't can you get assistance from more orientatet people.
I suggest reading lots of articles about gear and everything that has to do with oproduction.

I think reason is great btw. Ive been using logic for a long time with hardware synth and fx but the past few month ive been using reason only!

Funny. Its like people always wan't what they dont have even if it isnt "better". We want new thing just because they are different. I guess change in enviroment (and gear) is very just inspiring. At least we think it is.

Hey Avs, indeed this is very nice to see someone going "downstairs" from logic back to reason. Could you explain what exactly makes reason feeling better, maybe its just the more effective workflow?

it sounds interesting to me, because since a few monthes i am seriously re-designing my setup with hard consequences. every thing what feels not comfortable in an absolute fast, inspiring and intuitive workflow is beeing sold. the rest is punched with permament optimizing-processes.
the man-maschine-connection should be as wide open as possible. flow comes for sound, because good sound is good flow anyway.

sorry for offtopic but i find this way of thinking is like many electronic musicians must have. look on vstis like poco-character its just one big button for making a sound burning instead of 4 different effects like eq, compression and all the classics. this is the future..
a few years ago producers had doubts that digital sound could beat any maschine. today they do a pretty good job and start to make things possible which no classic hardware is able to do.
keep it simple!

abt this subject of workflow, ---sorrie for even go further off-topic, does anybody here has experience with hardware sequencers like sequentix p3. sometimes with sx3 to me it feels it is when it comes to putting notes not so intuitive and a hardware sequencer could maybe be helpfull. but maybe i am to optimistic about this. ---and abt your question: just start with cubase, relatively easy after some time i would say. ableton helps also. maybe try before u buy. learn one at a time. well thats how's it for me untill i know one.

that's why
1) i play in the notes i have in my mind using the master keyboard (at least if it's not these fast triggered 16th acid lines with 32th or 64th thrills )
2) make automation by using knobs on my hardware
1b) then correct inaccuracies using quantize
2b) correct controller data if it's necessary for the sound (e.g. rhythmic synth pad sweeps which needs accurate filter movements). but for e.g. strings/pads which serve as atmosphere, i leave my hand tweaked controller data as it is ('organic'?)

so you can still use a software sequencer, as long as you input your ideas in a more direct way than with the crappy mouse.

Yep workflow. The flow in Reason is just amazing. I feel like i can make whatever i want to with Reason in no time at all. Also the way you can control different parameters via "CV" is so cool. Its kinda modular.
The nice thing about the control in reason is that everything can be tempo synced. I can patch the LFO out from the Subtractor into the Env Filter, or make a matrix sequencer control the level of distortion on different hits in a drum pattern. Shure you have automation in Logic but its just not the same. Its not locked to a grid like in Reason. This is one of the main things i love about Reason.
Also the Malström is so flexible! I can make SO many different sounds with it. Id love to have a VST Malström for Logic.

BUT making music in logic does sound better but also takes more time.
