lets say you are working with older versions then cubase sx.
1. delete all channels by standing on them and pressing the 'delete' button.
2. open 1 channel (double click on the channels panel)
3. change the channel to a kind of channel that is 'midi' (there is an icon in the left side of the channel)
4. doible click on the playlist to open the writing pad
5. goto panels -> vst instruments panel and open the VB.
6. goto the channel and define it as a VB getting channel ( there is a sign when it written usb or something, click on it and define the VB)
7. double click on the pad that you created on the playlist (a new white window will be open with lots of keyboards on its left side)
8. now is the easy part - write the parts and press play to hear it.
tell me if you understand.

when i say "write the parts" i mean that you write with pen on the channel panel (the white window with the piano roll in the left part).
you can also do it with the help of the midi controller :
1. one way id to see the notes beeing marked (the piano in the left) when you press the midi controller and with the helf of the midi controller you can mark with the pen the exact note you want to use.
2. you can record the midi controller by pressing record and then quantize (place in the right place you ment very precisly).
that way you just play what you like.
goodluck

open options -> audio setup -> system
tell me which sound card mode is on ? (in the top right of the window)
try to switch the options in that particular window.
tell me what happened, it could be another problem...
