Greetings Everyone!!!

I have been observing for some time now that alot of people who venture into psy music production usually kickstart it all with a Dark Psy Track!!

Is there a particular reason behind this?!
I'm trying to understand the dynamics involved in the evolution of psy musicians and this observation has struck me as stereotype!

Is there some sort of modus operandi which I'm probably missing here?

And also, is there a mandate for an aspiring psy musician to first have experience as a DJ? I don't think so, but alot of my friends think otherwise .. Wat say u

My first track was a real squelchy number that went in and out of 3/4 with a big keyboard solo . Didnt sound that nice though. I stepped into psy trance straight out of progressive rock.

I think what leads people into dark is the fact it's all about making sounds with interesting textures and arranging them, Figuring out how to use a filter on a sawtooth to get the scratchiest scratch that ever scratched. Once you get a little more clued up usually your bass gets funky, your kick gets more snappy and you develop into more melodic ideas and original sounds.

I do think it should be mandatory for producer to dj aswell. It makes you listen to a lot of tracks in a different way. Also if you want to get into live sets djing is the best way to build up a feel for a well structured set.

To me, it's quite simple why people start producing music for the night these days. I'd say it's because it's a bit "trendy". When full-on was in everybody's stereos, aspiring producers who were new to psytrance headed straight for the VB1+Nord w/ delay formula with a screaming delay lama on top of that... and don't forget the screaming ten seconds build-up breaks with the ecstasy sample!

I guess I just love being a cynic...
No, but seriously... I believe that composers who have had some sort of success have always had their followers, and, if you're new to psytrance I guess you become a follower until you've settled down and found your own style and touch to things...           Aural transmissions from the deep forests of Sweden

^^^^ agree.

i started djing all sorts of styles.. house, hardcore (ahhhhhhhhhh!), the cheesiest cheesy fluffy trance, some psy along the way, and lots and lots of chillout. too much free time too much drugs

eventually i found fl and just played around with my own loops and sounds for months.

i just need to work on getting the sounds out of my head and into a computer.. why cant i just hook up a midi and audio cable to the back of my head ?!

hehehe .... i know what u mean pH_ ... i wish so too .. would make life so much easier.

So i gather from whats been said that i MUST get some Djing experience under my belt!!

I have a question tho : How would Mixing trax develop my sense of music production? would it enhance my ability to progress trax? would it improve musical progression in the trax that i am attempting to make? or does it proivide an overall knowlege of album structuring?

All those things. And then some. But the biggest thing for me is really listening intensely to a track beat for beat and staying right on top of where it's going. It really improves your feel of how to build it up, when to break it down. If you're ever stuck aswell while producing a track, get on the decks. If that doesnt inspire you, well just steal the best thing you just heard. Then change it some.

Interested in getting hardware .... Pioneer CDJ seems to be the only logical solution ... value for money but way over budget!!!

Anything just as tasty for the ones lower down the food chain??!?

my opinion of those who start dark is that they came from punk/metal/rock scene and thats why they cary that atmosphere with them.. I started with goa/psy as a child and Im sticking to it till now and will no matter the trends and scene.. Trust in Trance! I started as a dj cause I didnt have the equipment to produce but it doesnt matter do u start dj or produceing before, it only important that u listen a lot of this music u will easily progress both as a dj or producer or both depending on what u want           http://www.myspace.com/djacidkills

when I started it was all about making a mysterious uplifting sound, and I guess it still is, so my first track was actually pretty bright, not very good, but bright.
