Hello friends of psychedelic music,

Due to the recent number of really good posts on percussion processing (PsiloCybian i'm lookin at you), I have some really great perc sounds in a track I am currently working on, and I'm thinking about mixing strategies to have them be prominent in the mix without having them be overpowering.

My thought was to:

1. Mix all the synths and sounds together (complimentary EQs and placements in the stereo field)

2. Route all the synths to a return track, then that return to the master.

3. On that return track have a bunch of multiband compressors sidechained to the various cool sounding percs so I can duck a small bandwidth of the synths and sounds by 1 or 2dB each time a perc hits. The SCcompressors will have super fast attack and release. The part of the synths and sounds that ducks will be a narrow bandwidth corresponding to the best sounding part of the particular perc in question. The amount of ducking will be small (1-2dB).

The results of my thought-experiment tell me that this technique should highlight the array of perc sounds I have without having them be overpowering.

My questions are:

Does anyone already do this and if so does it work?
Is there a better way of doing this?

I will give this a shot in the next few days and let you guys know how it goes.

it could work man,one problem i m thinking is that your leads may loose some of their original groove...depending of how are sequenced the perc

hmmm.. that is good point, i will listen for it when I apply.

Are there techniques you use to make perc stand out more? aside from arrangement and EQ?           --
