hey,
how would you create a convincing illusion that a sound creeps up from behind and move slowly to 'front-stage-center'?
toying around with some ideas but cant make it convincing.. 'stereo with wide reverb then slowing close separation . no cigar
i know with 2.1 this is impossible but ive heard convincing illusions of a guy moving a hair shaver.. works nice on the headphones

Actually, phase inversion can contribute to this illusion. Try a variation on what you were doing:
1) Lopass filter (slight curve, low resonance) slowly rising
2) Reverb slowly fading away
3) L/R phase offset, starting at near-antiphase and ending at congruent phase. Note how antiphase sounds are VERY FUCKING WIDE, and even "all around you" (including behind!)
4) Doplar effect play - start with the pitch down a bit and modulate it up as it moves closer. Doesn't have to be obscene - think of an ambulance speeding at you from behind.
5) Consider crafty localization play for other sounds - give people a reference point. I have no idea where I would start for this, but play around.
6) Report back if anything works, 'cuz I'd like to know!
The brain is pretty shitty and localizing sound behind you - that's why we naturally tilt our heads towards a sound to locate its source. Our ears are built very well for stereoscopic localization in front, but not behind.
Hopefully you can get some results. Good luck.

no, the waves 360 plugs looks like its made for surround...
the waveart panorama plug looks very interesting but its gonna take another illusion to procure a copy. thx for the recommendation
@loki. thx for ideas
1) lopasss. not sure what the reasoning is behind this
2&3) yes,, starting very wide and fading reverb while closing the separation sounds pretty convincing on headphones.. not to bad on the speakers.
I'll check how wide i can get it with phasing.
4) the pitch to simulate doppler is a really clever idea. it might just put the cherry on top. would never have thought about that stunt.
5) yeah ,only tried solo sound. will see if it helps drawing focus with other sounds.
6) will do
i understand the problem with source in front makes this impossible reality.
the goal is to make it SEEM the sound was somewhere behind.. illusions,, not magic |

Hey loki,
how this antiphase wide? simply invert the phases of the left and right sound? I tried but no appeared wide effect. I must have done something wrong.

thx padmapani but when played in mono, this technique would make the sound disappear. What you do for use this techniq wide antiphase and it doesn't happen?

i guess mono compatibility isn't that important for psytrance. otherwise delaying one channel for a few samples could do the trick, but the sound will appear to come more from one side. logic's sample delay or even better the free ADT from vacuumsound are good for this.
for letting the sound move around and seem to come from behind, i've gotten the best results with wavearts panorama. |

yé thats the point.
just put some kind of stereo effect and try it in mono. If sounds good and not disappear, farewell and next.
IMO is it important also in psytrance.

so i played around with the panorama5 POM suggested.
.it creates a very good illusion. adding some suggestions from loki to make sound move will make it magic.
The developers want $127 for the full version. imagine a lot of programming hours went into it so good luck to them.
the rayspace (which look like it was designed for 5 channel output in mind) looks genius . i imagine some very intelligent developers worked on that. in-fact all their plugs looks amazing. 50pound only , they deserve each penny

any chance of you posting the results of this "creeping from behind sound", or of the "head shaving sound" you mentioned?
