Not directely audio related but I think it could interrest some of you.
I just recieved 4 SSD drives for my audio workstation (4 ocz vertex in RAID 0).
It's really amasing how fast my cubase 5 loads now :
Takes only 10-15 seconds to load (with all vst installed).
Spectrasonics Omnisphere loads in less than 3 seconds !
I'm sure that in the future old harddrives will be replaced with ssd drives...

4 ?! Blimey.
I just ordered a Vertex myself. Looking forward to installing it on Monday.
Can I ask what your maximum sustained read speed is? I ask because some SATA RAID controllers haven't caught up with SSD and are hitting their bandwidth throughput limit. You might not be getting much faster than 2 of the SSD's maximum read speed.
Technically you should be getting close to 800mb/s read, but it might be maxing out at 500mb/s or lower.
It might be worth testing and if necessary - upgrade your RAID controller to a newer chipset on PCI-E. |

ssd drives have an impressive read speed... but are so slow at writting that it only make sense for reading purpose. so yeah its ok for loading cubase but I dont think it can replace normal drives so far
Tomos: check your pms mate .. |

You are right.
I ordered them with an Adaptec 2405 Raid controller.
But I experienced stability problems (the card freeze!) with more than 3 drives on it.
Now I'm actually running my system (SSD) on my motherboard integrated raid controller (ICH10R).
I'm reading @ 600Mb/s and writing @ 500 Mb/s.
The system is fast and stable but it could be faster
Just ordered the highpoint 3520 RAID controller.
I SHOULD reach the 800 Mb read speed with it.
I don't recommend Adaptec cards for 3 or more SSD (areca or highpoint are better).
Tomos, will you install your system on the ssd?
I would recommend to have at least 2 ssd drives to avoid stuttering (but not sure if this issue still exist with Vertex)... |

The Vertex don't suffer from stuttering found in earlier SSD's and the write speed is much improved. These are premium drives currently at the top of the pile.
i/o operations are much touted as SSDs downfall (short read/write operations) however that also seems to have been solved in the new generation of drives.
My system drive is most definitely going on it! Along with all my projects. I might eventually get a second drive to RAID0 it.
Hey dmtoad, read this:

There's a clue in the title!
Might be worth a try! |
