Hey guys,

I'm thinking of getting a SSD drive to go with my Core i5 production pc. Does anyone here have any experience with them? Is there any benefit in buying them or is it better to wait until they come down in price.

What sort of performance improvements can i expect? I'm guessing i'll be able to load projects quicker. Any other benefits?           http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

Im thinking of getting one for my macbook to avoid disc problems while traveling with the computer.

I had some problems with my drive while playing on fullmoon fest and had to repair the disc.

I probably wouldnt have the problems if i had a SSD

To bad they are so expensive.

SSDs are very fast so the start-up time is reduced and of course, you can load projects faster because no seeking of the head is required. They consume very little power so they make the battery last longer(if you're going for a notebook). The greatest advantage over traditional HDDs is that they don't have any moving parts so they produce zero noise and get less heated up.
The disadvantage is that they have limited read/write cycles and are costly.

SSDs have been used in military applications...
I think you should go for it!           BONG : keep away from children -- no CFC, Only THC. Save the Earth.

Hmmm any idea on whether the playback of audio files in the sequencer will be improved? Theoretically it should as it'll take less time to access those files.

I'm thinking of getting a 64GB one, can be had for close to $100 which isn't so bad i think.          http://www.soundcloud.com/getafixmusic

Well, it actually depends on the software you're using...
If your software loads the file into the RAM and plays it from there (which is most likely the case), it'll load faster. Wont make any difference in the playback...

I recently installed an SSD in my macbook funnily enough following playback problems in my set @ Fullmoon. I have had only problems with my old mechanical drive (sudden motion sensor going off on stage, and after shutting that off still massive skips) I bought a WD 64GB as i exclusively use WD in my setups, and the company WD bought to put these on the market used to develop SSD´s for use in combat zones (hd´s in tanks etc.) Now i get no skips what so ever, apps take a great deal less time to launch and reboot times have decreased somewhat. All in all a MASSIVE speed improvement! As it is still quite new i have yet to experience any (if at all) performance decrease over time (lack of trim support in OSX) The controller in this drive should be able of some simple garbage collection but it remains quite unclear if that will help alleviate the problem.
Apple is supposedly working on trim support, so by the time i need to improve the ailing performance of my drive i can do it from the terminal (i hope) Not all SSD´s are built the same and i would strongly advice against getting one of the cheaper ones. Also of note should be that without trim, SSD´s are best used as boot and app drives and not drives where loads of files are constantly being written and rewritten (this will decrease the time it takes the drive to hit a wall performance wise) On a final note i can mention that the price of the drive i bought was around 200 US. A small price to pay to ensure that i can present my music in a flow without interrupting people´s experience= no more skips, at all, ever!

I am still waiting for a drop in the 128 GB line so i can pimp my desktop with SSD too. My mission is to have a completely silent computer and right now only my HD´s are audible           Mastering available here:

SSD has low lifespan, they degrade considerably with use

quoted from the datasheet of the drive i have:

MTBF 1,400,000 hours

Operational Lifespan

Read Unlimited
Write 17.5 GB/Day

Thats 1.4 million hours of use on average before experiencing a fail!

As mentioned above the performance decrease can be counteracted quite effectively via trim support on the OS level (win 7 already has, OS X is coming at some point)

Besides i always keep multiple backups

LoL thanks for the compliment Uphavas

Id probably go for the ocz Vertex 2 or a Intel X25 SSD, and us it for the Boot partition.

Some things to know is that your not supposed to defrag those drives.
And yes they are soooo worth it!

Everyone who I know that actually HAS an SSD drive says they're more than worth it, and one of the most massive upgrades in speed. People who don't have them and haven't seen the difference are more likely to say they're too expensive to be worth it for such a small ammt of space.

They're still too expensive for me to consider at the moment, but when the time comes to upgrade the main computer I sure as hell will get one then.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe
