The TB303 (and its' emulators) is one of the best examples/sources for squelchy sounds.

a 303 emulator. spend hours with it and it will you give you lots of stuff... I'd also suggest a sh-101 emulator... just play with your synths and plug-ins... |

when i was designing the squelch generator, it was basically built around a simple premise. most stereotypical 'squelch', 'zipper', 'ripping', 'psy' sounds consist of a few basic elements...
- simple saw wave, or pair of slightly detuned saw waves
- coarse pitch-modulation, either through LFO or at note-on
- 1-2 pole HP filter with medium-high resonance, often swept inversely to pitch (so when pitch goes down, cutoff opens up)
so all you need is a saw wave, a high-pass filter, and a way of modulating the pitch of the oscillators and the cutoff of the filter. this is clearly the most basic and straightforwards (and BORING!) squelch. when experimenting it's worth thinking about syncing oscillators, using different filter models, changing modulation source, adding 'grit' through sync or distortion, etc. etc...
but most importantly, once you learn it, forget it and do something new |
