hi
Recently been using a simple free SPL meter app for my iphone. I started using it because i have to work at nights, so I measured max levels I can work during quiet hours because i have lots of kids. But after using it a bit during days/nights while mixing I found out that if I keep the level approximately same all the time it is easy to achieve a better results. For me it is ~72-75 dB during days and i keep it around 68 dB during nights. Especially I find it useful when you are getting back to the track you mixed before - setting the same level you worked on it earlier helps focus on mixing faster. It is like you paused a video game and now resuming from the same spot So download some app for android or ios and try it for yourself.
PS I know the rule of monitoring at 85 dB but I rarely work that loud..

i have found i mix better at low volume.. i had thought it would be easier with loud volumes but I tend to mix out the high end when i mix at loud levels making the mixdown sound dull and lifeless.. one other thought... i have no sound treatment so loud volumes will make any room problems worse / more of a problem

btw there is something miss understood about this subject, what ever the volume you listen too, the room affect as much the sound (your speakers frequency curve change depending loudness though) |

really? i'm sure i have read somewhere that increasing the volume highlights the peak / trough frequencies and increases standing waves.. mind you just because i read it doesn't make it right...
I'm in a temporary space so room treatment is not going to happen.. low volume mixing and checking on headphones seems to work ok for me

Artistic mixing - Gain riding while mixing is the best to create a bad mix soundwise . In theory.
just can't understand. why to set a studio monitor to be not accurate on purpose ?
I always gain ride to not disturb anyone . But it its like mixing deaf. http://soundcloud.com/magimix-1/chilling-forest-whispers

our ears and monitors are affected, but room acoustics are linear, what happen at high volume happen at low too.. you always have the same proportion of coloration except if you listen very low maybe..but its a bit usless for mixing.. cause of earing curve ect.. |

Yep, I do the same. I have some fixed positions on my sound card's levels. I usually work with rather low levels, but sometimes check things a bit louder - sort like the difference it would make between a mastered and a non mastered track - and that's pretty much it. Not changing the levels all the time is great and helps to create a better reference for everything. Haven't tried that kind of measurement! It's a great idea, since we all have this smart phones now, will check it out! |

Well... Fletcher–Munson curves are result from human hearing study also known as equal loudness contour..
It shows that at 90dB SPL our ears tend to hear all frequencies pretty much linearly compared to other loudness levels..
