They analyze spectrum.
Sorry, couldn't resist...
Can use them for determining what to EQ (to ease a "pressure" coming from your bass where your leads need to shine, for example). Or you can use them to find at which note a sample plays. Everybody will tell you to just use your ears (and will be right), but sometimes it's too difficult - when tuning a kick, for example. |

if you hunt down any subtractive synthesis tut.. they will use a spectrum analyzer and show it's purpose in tangible context.

it depends on your roomtreatment, speakers and ears.
the better those are the less you need a spectrumanalyzer.

i don't know about that.. but hey doesn't FL's limiter by default help remedy rouge frequencies, giving ya a less troublesome and spectrum attentive mix?

@rAMBO FACE - YOU sAID freakin with factors like good ears and treated room... spectrum necessity would be less! I SAY ah don't know about that......meaning there's always subtle portions that a spectrum analyzer brings to light. PERHAPS in setups like FL, where the limiter is influencing..... THEN visual spectrum discernment might be less of a priority? (i only had 3 hours of sleep but i know what i'm saying! maybe..lol)

yes, you are right imo... but understand, the more you can hear (the truth), the less you have to take a look on the spectrum.
example, you can hear the is some strange sounds at the kick every second kick. you know you maybe should cut the lows of you snare/clap. if you dont hear it, there is no other way than analyzers to find out things like this. that means it will reduce the usage of analyzers. people with a well treated room and earexperience will agree.
dude, i dont know what you are talking about the fl-limiter... dynamics are also important for me, thats why i use this plug in (i only use limiter for mastering), but the dynamics (shown in the fl-limiter) dont say much about the spectrum...
@soundmagus: the pinguin analyzer is also nice, yeah!
cheers

this nice tool has multichannel support. you can display more then one spectrum in one window. nice to fit two subgroups together or kick and bass eq'ing.
