What do people recommend as a really accurate spectrum analyzer? I use paz at the moment but dont find it very reliable. |

Pinguin is pretty good from what I've seen...
I tried SpectraLab, it makes me want to have a seizure
it drives my eyes crazy...maybe I'll try it again and see if I can change it at all.

hey Colin, you use Spectra lab, I get these moving lines that speed up and slow down (not the spectrum obviously, but on it) Sorta like if you see a TV through a camcorder, how there are lines that move up and down the TV.
Do you know what this is from and how to fix it?
It looks like it's very responsive to the signal coming in and could be a usefull tool. I would like to try my 30 day evaluation at full functionality before it's up.
Any help would be appreciated thanx.

Ah... that's visual aliasing - SpectraLab is trying to update the screen at a different rate than the screen itself is being refreshed, so every screen refresh contains a slightly different portion of the image Spectralab is trying to display. You could try a different refresh rate on your monitor (if you don't have an LCD display, where the refresh rate is normally fixed).
I use v4.32.08, viewing the average L/R spectrum, spectrograph and Left versus Right time series simultaneously on a 1400x1050 laptop, and whilst the display flickers sometimes I don't get the aliasing you do. What's your setup?

I'm using an old flat screen crt...if I increase the refresh rate the screen starts to wobble...As long as I don't use a Logarithmic display in SpectraLab I can get it to just minimal flickering, which isn't bad at all.
I may end up doing something similar to what you're doing with your laptop. Would be nice to just have a dedicated display for it, plus that would be an LCD screen so no issues with the visual aliasing.
How do you have the audio running to the laptop?

anybody uses reaper? (I mean the sequencer) 'cos in it there's a type of eq which is also a spectrum analyzer, but what I don't understand is that voxengo span shows different results at the same parameters, eg. the main peak is 20 hz lower and when applying eq the voxengo seems to be right. anyobody got a suggestion what might be the cause? |

Pimpa: Maybe the FFT bucket size (the bandwidth in Hz of each band). Or the integration time (the length of time that the algorithm looks at).
Another thing that might affect levels is wether the algorithms are AES17 compliant or just look at sample values. (This differs by about 3 dB in practise).
