well, i didn't understand why the 'amplitude vs time' graph and the meter shows a peak at -0.2dB and the spectrum analyzer shows a peak at -36dB..

here is the snapshot (horrible quality but good enought to understand what i'm talking about): http://www.dump.com/skan/

are there any plugs on this wav?
how about on the master during the export, before bringing into soundforge?           "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

no, no plugs applied...

the spectrum shows a lot less dB on all .wav files that i open on sound forge...

i'm worried about it because i can't set the compressor parameters right if the analyzer shows me wrong graphs...

Ok... Reading Sound Forge FFT Graphs 101

The -36 dB figure refers to the loudest frequency present in the soundfile and not to the peak level of the sound itself. You can tell this because right next to where it says "-36 dB" it says "Prominent Frequency: ", and right afterwards it gives you the frequency it's talking about in both Hz and note formats (in this case 29Hz).

Basically you can ignore this 'Prominent Frequency' information for the most part. It's only really useful if you want to identify the pitch of a simple sound.

The information you're asking about is all there, on the screen... you just have to read it           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

let's suppose that i want to apply compression on this file, what i'm going to follow to set the threshold level?? the upper graph or the spectrum graph??

and you said that -36dB is the "loudest frequency present in the soundfile and not to the peak level", but, the peak level isn't the loudest frequency??

i'm a little confused about those things... for example, if you analize a well produced song you will see a huge peak of the kick&bass and a little depression then the frequency of the others instruments (that should be as linear as possible), the thing is, these frequencies of the others instruments reaches something like -15dB while kick&bass reaches -5dB/-0.1dB.. why?

did i make myself clear? heheheh

by the way, thx for the answers...

No, the peak level at any given time is the result of adding together every frequency present in the sound at that time. Each frequency is at a different level at different times, depending on the sound - for instance the beginning of the click of a kick drum might contain eg. 1KHz @ -30dB but no bass at all, while the 'boom' at the end of the kick might contain eg. 36Hz @ -20dB but nothing above 200Hz.

Unless the loudest frequency is also the only frequency in the soundfile (ie. the soundfile contains nothing but a pure sine wave), the peak level will always be higher than the level of the loudest frequency.

No... just like an egg is not a ham omelette...
