Hi !
when i listen to proffesional psy music
and look at winamps spectrum diagram i can see that all the piles are moving.
But when i listen to my own music only the lower piles are moving allthough i boosted quite a lot high frequenses when i made my song.WHat makes the Spectrum analyser show all the piles, is this visible only after the song has been mastered ? and if
is there a mastering plugin i could use to do this with
Best regards Conny ? |

There is a logical connection between mastering and spectrum analyser graphical representation but it is tiny. When you master you use compression a gentle compression which applied on master, it should create more dynamic range (piles move). Although piles move doesn't mean track is mastered or not. Depends on many many things imho. Moreover professional psy music isn't a proper example of mastering you should do.
For mastering i would recommend you to read Bob Katz's material available online or to buy Waves documentation regarding mastering.

actually compression can only lower the dynamic range -
and that's exactly what happens on the winamp spectrum viewer with a harsh compressed material: lots of peaking spikes across the whole spectrum.
I'm not sure how that spectrum viewer works, wether its peak on each frequency is -12dB or higher, but with any serious spectrum analyzer you will never see a big chunk of 0dB spikes going up on the whole spectrum (when listening to music).
Nevertheless though, I heard actually it's a good way to test ur mix visually using the crappy winamp spectrum viewer

Trip, let's say you have commercial compressed mix, means almost no dynamic range. If i apply gentle compression on it (-5dB threshold, small attack and small release) i do create dynamic range, because i decrease the volume of starting of the sample while other parts still with no dynamic range. |

you would bring everything above -5dB down - getting it closer to the lower levels, thus reducing dynamic range - esspecially with a fast attack.
a longer attack will delay the compressor's kicking in fully - which just preserves the original signal.

audiotests.batcave.net/1.jpg, so you say it is not dynamic range. |

another
im saying it is dynamic range - lowered one...
even on this very sketchy drawing, it is clearly seen that the difference between the soft signal and the loud one is smaller

Try to fix it in the mix first. It's impossible to create a mega master from a mediocre mix.

Conny - just make a good mix. A good mix will sound very close to mastered sound.

hey man buy wavelab 5 is killer for analizers dont use winamp!! jejejeje look on the net for fletcher and munson graphs so u can compare the spectrum analisis of your music. that helped me a lot!!! I use the 60 band spectrum analizer . also compare it to other professionals like astrix
i hope this helps man!!!!!!! |

ok, one more thing...maybe
has anybody ever seen that using wavelab (or probably any other wave editing software), you can get a similar effect to a visualiser.
First off, i'd like to take Wavelab because that's what i've used.
Set the main window so that it shows a couple of seconds of your track on screen. Make sure that the "Follow Song" (or whatever) is set to ON. Play your track. You'll get a visual display of how well your peaks are doing.... magnify / minimize according to needs....
am i making sense @ all...is it correct ??? |
