Very nice chilled flow to all the songs. Dubby, trippy, and just trundling along at the perfect pace. Can't wait to hear this in my good headphones instead of my mediocre PC speakers.

i reckon the sound quality production on this is good, but reading the notes on the promotional bumph given by darren sangita <the other half of spectralite > temple of stars hasnt actually been mastered, whereas , the future realease will be,incidentally the new greg hunter release `future dust` is being mastered.

well i guess from speaking with darren @ ashirvad priew night @ inspiral in october , it could be a while b4 `spectralite` lp album comes out, and will be probably somewhat different `including` being mastered,i think they just wanted to get it out there ,in one incarnation at least,... i`l ask him, maybe he`l come on here and say something about that himself.

It would be nice then if they offered some kind of discount toward "final" release to people who purchased unfinished one.           http://www.chillumafia.com

i totally luv this release. so if i have to make comments..

- the first 4.5 minutes of 'valley of the phoenix' is pure brilliance...the intro and buildup draws you in and the groove is intoxicating..after that it takes a turn and goes in another direction which kinda breaks the magic spell...however i luv turn this one up loud..

-the forest ends with a 1 minute sample from john cage's 4'33

-the audio quality sounds good...maybe in places there is too much going on to discern bass from mids, however with the FLAC's you can tweak the EQ to taste..

happy to support V1 of this project.

Then they should offer it as a free download or, at least, make it "listen only" on bandcamp.

Just my $0.02.           http://www.chillumafia.com

I'm sure they can track who bought the unmastered copies and if they want they can give us links to the mastered versions when the time comes.

i'm a little surprised that it would go out unmastered - a good mastering engineer can do so much with a decent premix. Sure it adds to cost, but it is well worth it. For the mastering studio we work covering this cost would take around 75 copies sold on bandcamp.

one of the things a mastering engineer also has is another set of ears that can hear things for the first time.

Of course there are debates about what kind of mastering approach to choose, which is another topic altogether, and an interesting one at that.

either way, i love what i hear on this release and i have recommended it to my music loving friends.

looking forward to more

All of this talk of mastering seems a bit unnecessary. These tracks were seemingly done around 2008, and since then they have probably been tweaked constantly. Anything Greg does needs no mastering!

no matter how exalted or capable the producer, good mastering improves the final result - the better the mix the more the mastering person has to work with.

some people have the gear and studio to have a go at mastering themselves, but ultimately it is best to attend a session in a professional mastering studio, and make use of their gear and their ears.

Twisted use Kevin Metcalfe at the Soundmasters - http://www.soundmasters.co.uk/index.htm

We use Dave Blackman at Hilton Grove

Ultimae use Huby Sea

Yaniv has mastered for Aleph Zero

Dakini use Bernie Grundman in Tokyo

Darren had a heck of lot to say about the process of an album creation, and surrounding issues, which i`m not really able to say a lot about for one reason and and another, more to be revealed by himself very soon.
As Andrew has indicated though,< beyond the artist >, the mastering `process` has essential potential in itself.

re mau and vice versa - we paid for him to fly from Italy to London and attend the session because we wanted his ears and opinions in the room. He approved the master we went into production with. Now he feels it is too loud. if he felt so at the time then he did not do anything to correct it.

if you read the article he posted the basic gist of it is that loud mastering with overcompression and loss of dynamic range is killing music. but that does not make such a catchy title.

you are right that it is a really interesting article - and it underlines just how subjective a process this can be. not all mastering engineers will give the same result. indeed - if you're interested you can give the same track to different people and then compare the results and choose the one you prefer to go on and master your album.
