I masterize in a very amateur level,
I have equalize how my common sense tells me
I have compress and limit.
I have achieved the RMS i want (-10 -9 -8 rms)in wavelab reading.
OK, the problem i have is that if i play my masterized trak in my laptop with the little speakers happens that everytime the song is in a very soft part like a bridge or breik with pads and soft instruments, the volume raises up and then when it comes again the kik and bass it sound like low again or normal...
Can someone help me telling me whats the problem?
IM sure is my compresion or limitation but how you can i achieve a nice rms level to make it sound fat and with good volume but without this issues about volumes in soft parts.
Thank you in advance for the support. |

option 1: lower this parts volume from the mix stage , as you know thats what gonna happen.
option 2:use expender as well in the mastering
the trick is to compress the shit out of it , re expend with correct envelopes and then limit.
this way u not gonna get "square" track but dynamic yet loud result
option 3: to be used along those other ones , use multiband compression is better then single compressor.
or.. make good matering with less rms , probably smart idea but not so commercial sound as they used to
another thing is to "clean" all your sounds so they are not clashing into each other in the multiband compressor
btw it happens alot in parties cause of the 'volume war' of stupid djs that get into the compression too hard and play lower volume shit sound ... as soon i come up and take the master volume down the hole set sounds much more dynamic and usualy smart soundman will also compress less immidiatly www.sattelbattle.com

happened to me too the last days on a track im working ,, the same thing in the intro which is pads/fx/speach/lead and when kick/bass came in everything got somehow quieter and this in the mixing stage so im with option 1 as Elad wrote , fix it in the mix stage is the best solution
(off) still wonder what the hell, why do they give to djs compressors ?? , 1st they dont know how to use them and second the tracks are already compressed, even if some know how to use them correctly they are not needed.. most of these people are totally ignorant about those machines, take them away from djs, pleasee ....

this is certainly because the volumes of your sounds and of your beat are not in balance. probably the sounds are too quite, which will get them much louder during compressing/limiting, and your beat is too loud, which will get those parts where the beat is playing way more compressed/limited, so the sounds are more quite when playing with bass than without.
only thing to fix this is in the mix, by adjusting volume levels and eq right.
and gutter, the djs are not the ones with the compressor, but the soundguys protecting their pa from the loudness-war-fucked-up djs

im sorry i never could understand that
what really djs have to do with the real loudness of the track? I mean everything is made by you, you make a track (lets say you have not used compression at all) everything is perfect and peak at lets say at -10dB and the mastering engineer take it make it loud at -2dB and makes it tight super wooow sounding,, where the hell to they need compression for and how much louder can they play ffs man , i cant understand that.. i know the guys from the clubs can always use a limiter at -1 for protecting their system and be sure it wont jump and burn everything ,again that was made by the mastering engineer cause as i said before its mastered to peak at -2 so this cant happen, but what do djs really do, just pushing the volume up till your ears bleed, only that i suppose? im sorry for the high jack of the thread.. im very curious bout that

djs WILL push the levels as much as possible, well into the reds of the mixer just because they want to sound louder than the previous guy. Even if the tracks are mastered, they will turn the gain up cause that's what djs do.
As to the tracks sounding quiter, its simply because most of the energy of a mix is at the bottom end. When the kick and/or bass come in, they make the compressor/limiter work on the full range of the spectrum (when using a single band compressor). So if you have them too loud in the mix, this effect will be even more apparent.
You should not start using multiband compressors to avoid this. I thought they were the holy grail for a professional mastering engineer up to the point where I went to a proper mastering studio only to find out that the engineer used single band compressors and resided to multiband compressors to sort out mixes that were not mixed well.
So take care when EQing and mixing the kick and bass parts.
Peace out.

have you never seen a dj where all red lights blink on the mixer? if so, congratulations!
no seriously, all pas are protected by a limiter. and a lot of "djs" got the bad habbit to turn the channels louder & louder because they think its cool or whatever. the result is the protection limiter compressing the sound to distortion.
where the limiter is set to is controlled by the soundguys who own the pa, and if they see a dj with that habbit going they'll probably put the threshold a bit more down to protect their pa.
EDIT: damn, you were faster pipe&slippers https://soundcloud.com/hazak

Elad and Pipe: I tried cuting more the lower freq to be free of clashes and it helped me a lot, now when it comes kik bass again i dont have this wierd thing about low volume and whatelse i can achieve more volume in the mastering without taking the RMS to the edge. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
The problem i think is that as i have 8 inches speakers and a small room i have a lot of bass and this ones are specialy bummers, so im controling this extra low freq for now on.
THANK YOU!!!!

+1
The fact alone that one has to wear earplugs to avoid Tinnitus makes this whole thing ridiculous. That's the reason why I rarely go to parties anymore...

When you hear so much bass inside the room you tend to mix it lower than needed and when heard on other systems it might not be as it was inside the room where it has its special character and acoustics and among with the 8" monitors sounds full enough of course ,, its been my problem too thats why im mentioning , try to figure out the frequencies to balance them right in their volumes, its one of the worst problems imho.

Some speakers have EQ switches to compensate for smaller rooms. My Mackies do, my Alesis don't, but they have a 6.5 woofer so its not necessary.

Serag i think it s pumping what you are hearing?it can be your compressor or/and limiter sux at controlling complex source ,you use bad settings or both (check your attack and realese settings , bassically you want fast attack and release for punchy sound and level boost but it s all about compromise with artifacts and pumping ) |
